July 25, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Logan O’Hoppe, DH – Williamsport Crosscutters – Philadelphia Phillies – – 3-3, HR (5), 2R, 3RBi, SB (2) – – Sometimes a player’s statistical year entices you to go back and read former posts. Check in on the analysis to see if said player is on pace with what was “predicted” so to speak. This leads me to O’Hoppe. Now, I won’t drag you through another bio of the kid. I’ll just place right here what I wrote about him in our 2018 UTR OAS feature. With that said, let’s just state that the 6’2″- 185 lb. righty bat is on a real soild track and better yet, has improved his stock through this season as well as into the 2019 off season. Pound-for-pound, offensively, he’s the top catcher in the New York-Penn League, and as a twenty-third rounder with a defense-first player, he’s displaying the potential to play up his on-paper offensive profile. Keep a close eye on him.

California League:

  • Luis Campusano, DH – Lake Elsinore Storm – San Diego Padres – – 2-5, HR (11), R, RBi – – With Modesto’s Cal Raleigh now shipped off to Double-A Arkansas, the 6’0″- 215 lb. Augusta, GA native becomes the top dog at catcher in the Cal League. Campusano has registered four multi-hit games in a row, has a hit in 13 out of his last 15 games and he has actually been in top catcher conversation all season long. Heading into Friday, he sports a .329 batting average with 25 doubles, 11 home runs and 60 RBi, which is way more than you could ask for from the catching position. The round two pick out of Cross Creek HS (GA) has a sprinkle of first base under his belt as well. Simply put, or however you slice it, the Padres current number twelve prospect has done nothing but pad his standing as the organization’s top catching prospect, and could potentially see a Double-A promotion of his own before season’s end.
  • Joey Bart, C – San Jose Giants – San Francisco Giants – – 2-4, HR (11), R, RBi –
  • Jonah Bride, 3B – Stockton Ports – Oakland A’s – – 3-5, 2 2B, R, RBi, K –

Carolina League:

  • Kyle Isbel, RF – Wilmington Blue Rocks – Kansas City Royals – – 1-4, 3B, R, 3RBi, K –
  • Tyler Freeman, 2B – Lynchburg Hillcats – Cleveland Indians – – 4-6, 2R, K –
  • Wilbis Santiago, 3B – Lynchburg Hillcats – Cleveland Indians – – 2-5, 3B, 3R, 2RBi, 2K –
  • Jake Adams, 1B – Fayetteville Woodpeckers – Houston Astros – – 2-2, R, RBi, 3BB –
  • Steele Walker, CF – Winston-Salem Dash – Chicago White Sox – – 2-4, HR (7), 2R, 2RBi –

Florida State League:

  • Oneil Cruz, SS – Bradenton Marauders – Pittsburgh Pirates – – 2-4, HR (7), 2B, R, 2RBi, 2K –
  • Alejandro Kirk, C – Dunedin Blue Jays – Toronto Blue Jays – – 1-3, 2B, 2RBi, BB – – In this past off-season’s UTR OAS series, I highlighted Kirk as our choice at catcher for the Blue Jays. You can read his blurb here, and I’ll admit, the stocky 5’9″- 220 lb. righty isn’t the most forceful catcher in the game and not the most athletic guy on the field, but boy, he knows what the hell to do at the plate, both standing beside it and crouched behind it. He’s currently batting .309 with only three homers and 33 RBi in 71 total games, but his 44 walks to 32 strikeouts, a. 413 on-base percentage along with a .993 fielding percentage and 33 percent caught-stealing rate mark the signs of a potential first-division starter. The ambiguity of it all is that the Tijuana, Mexico native came into 2019 unranked in several top prospect publications, and in the ones where he was recognized, he sat behind Gabriel Moreno and Reese McGuire on the depth chart. Yet, Kirk was an all-star here. Recently however, Kirk was ranked inside several mid-season 2019 prospect lists, and has been seen as high as number six on a recent list. I know it may sound a little self serving, but honestly, I don’t care. Thanks to all the major publications for continuing to prove that Jim and I know what we are talking about. Pedigree doesn’t matter. Production does.
