July 16, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Matt Whatley, C – Hickory Crawdads – Texas Rangers – – 3-5, 2B, R, 2RBi, SB (21) – – Looking at the stat line of the Texas Rangers round three pick out of Oral Roberts University (OK) in 2017, you wouldn’t think he’s a full time catcher. Once a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award for the nation’s top college catcher, the Rangers are seeing this season what he’s fully capable of. The 5’11”- 200 lb. righty has stolen a career high 21 bases (leading all minor league catchers including Triple and Double A), has posted a .359 on-base percentage, helped by a near Sally League leading 54 walks, which is 22 more walks than he registered in his previous 96 games over his first two years as a pro.

Labour belted his league leading thirteenth homer, a two-out, solo shot to left center, to open up Salem-Keizer scoring, in what ended up an 8-2 win over Hillsboro. However, the 21-year-old Dominican Republic is dominating the Northwest League in runs scored (32), RBi (30), total bases (87), slugging percentage (.755), OPS (1.142), while ranking second in hits (39) behind teammate, third baseman Sean Roby, who has 40.

The 6’6″- 235 lb. lefty clubbed his league leading ninth home run in Danville’s convincing 7-1 win over Burlington last night.
