July 15, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Simon Whiteman, 2B – Salem-Keizer Volcanoes – San Francisco Giants – – 2-4, 3B, R, K, 2 SB (14,15) – – He may have fallen short of the winning the Rhodes Scholarship, but the Ivy League product (Yale) came to the Giants via the ninth round this past June and all he’s done is produce like a potential NWL MVP. He’s batting .283 with a .411 on-base percentage, but more impressive is his Northwest League-leading 15 stolen bases and a pristine 21:20 BB:K ratio in 27 games thus far.

California League:

  • Heliot Ramos, CF – San Jose Giants – San Francisco Giants – – 2-4, HR (12), R RBi, BB, K – The 6’1″- 185 lb. Puerto Rico native hit a home run in consecutive games for the third time this season and has collected a hit in 14 out of his last 17 games.

  • Cole Freeman, CF – Potomac Nationals – Washington Nationals –– 2-4, 3B, 2R, 2 SB (24,25) –It’s kind of a cool thing that (basically) the game winning run comes in the top of the fourth. The Nationals beat Fayetteville by  3-0 score, but it’s even cooler that the run comes from a runner stealing home. That’s what Freeman did after leading off the top of the fourth inning. Freeman, Washington’s fourth round draft selection out of LSU in 2017, roped his his third triple of the season to right field before designated hitter Aldrem Corredor struck out, and catcher Alex Dunlap followed with a groundout to short. With two outs, Woodpeckers coaches paid starter Austin Hansen a mound visit. He proceeded to issue a walk to left fielder Jack Sundberg putting runners on the corners, but not for long. Freeman proceeded to steal home in the Fayetteville starter’s transition back to the mound giving Potomac a 1-0 lead. The Nats tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth, and with a clean ninth by Potomac reliever Frankie Bartow, the Nats closer notched his third save of the season and secured the win.

Diaz clubbed his fifth homer of the season. breaking a mini 0-7 slump over his last two games, but prior to Vermont’s July 13 game versus Batavia, Diaz logged a seven game hit streak where he registered 11 hits in 30 at-bats (.367).
