July 12, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Christian Koss, 3B – Grand Junction Rockies – Colorado Rockies – – 3-3, HR (2), 2B, R, RBi, SB (3) – – Koss has been a one-man wrecking crew over his last six games. The 2019 – twelfth rounder out of UC Irvine collected three hits in his first pro game before going on a mini-slump to start July. He batted 1-12 (.083) July 1 through July 4, but has since registered six consecutive multi-hit games, batting .619 (13-21) in that span and has two home runs in his last two games.

California League:

  • Ryan Vilade, SS – Lancaster Jethawks – Colorado Rockies –– 2-3, 2B, 3RBi –
  • Gareth Morgan, LF – Inland Empire 66ers – Los Angeles Angels –– 1-4, HR (14), R, RBi, 2K –

Carolina League:

  • Jomar Reyes, 3B – Frederick Keys – Baltimore Orioles – – 3-3, HR (6), 2R, 2RBi –
  • Zach Jarrett, RF – Frederick Keys – Baltimore Orioles – – 1-4, HR (7), R, RBi, BB, 2K –
  • MJ Melendez, DH – Wilmington Blue Rocks – Kansas City Royals – – 1-2, HR (6), R, 2RBi –

  • Yanio Perez, 3B – Down East Wood Ducks – Texas Rangers – – 2-4, 2 HR (4,5), 2R, 3RBi –
  • Samuel Huff, DH – Down East Wood Ducks – Texas Rangers – – 1-3, HR (8/23), R, RBi, BB, K – – Huff just keeps on rolling, blasting his eighth homer for Down East, and 23rd on the season, However, if the Rangers seventh round pick in 2016 out of Arcadia HS (Phoenix) continues his current home run pace in conjunction with his performance impact at the Futures Game, he could find himself in the Minor League Player of the Year discussion at season’s end.
  • Jeremy Pena, 2B – Fayetteville Woodpeckers – Houston Astros – – 2-3, 3B, 2B, R, 2RBi K – – Pena seems the be back on track after receiving a late-June promotion to HiA. The 2018 Maine University draftee (third round) opened the season with Quad Cities and in 66 games with the River Bandits registered a .293/.389/.421/.810 slash line with five home runs and 17 stolen bases. Enough for the Astros to shift him to Fayetteville, where he went 4-22 in his first week. However, he’s logged 12 hits over his last 23 at-bats (.522), highlighted by seven extra base hits with three doubles in his last two games.

Florida State League:

  • Trevor Larnach, RF – Fort Myers Miracle – Minnesota Twins – – 2-4, HR (6), R, 3RBi, BB, K – – With the MLB trade deadline vast approaching, buyers and sellers are starting to come into focus, and if you’re like me, the first thing you think of is what prospects might/will be on the move. I think depending on how far the Twins are willing to reach to obtain help for the stretch run, Larnach, Minnesota’s number one draft pick in 2018 out of Oregon State, could be a priority target. Rightfully so, as the 6’4″- 220 lb. lefty has logged a .310/.377/.458/.835 slash line with a Florida State League leading 26 doubles, 142 total bases and a .310 batting average. It’s guys like Larnach that make guys like Jim and me save our National League-only league waiver money.
  •  Mason Martin, 1B – Bradenton Marauders – Pittsburgh Pirates – – 1-4, HR (1/24), R, 3RBi, K – – Martin cracked his first Class A Advanced home run last night, a three run shot in the first inning, and he heads into Saturday’s games ranking fifth overall in the minors with 24 home runs.

  • Bryson Stott, SS – GCL Phillies East – Philadelphia Phillies – – 3-4, 3B, R, 2RBi – – Not a bad way to start your pro career. Stott, the Phillies number one draft pick last month out of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, lined his first career hit, an RBi single in the first, then repeated the feat again in the third.
