July 5, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Oneil Cruz, SS – Bradenton Marauders – Pittsburgh Pirates – – 1-4, HR (3), R, 2RBi, 2K – – The Pirates top minors shortstop and number four overall prospect drove his third home run of the season over the center field wall in what was a Marauder three-run third inning; and eventual 5-3 Bradenton victory. Dating back to April 27, Cruz is currently riding a nine game hit streak. How so? Cruz suffered a fractured foot versus the Daytona Tortugas that day and missed nearly two months of action. Although Cruz’ home run last night was a big blow to the Firefrogs, the bigger star of the game was Bradenton starter Brad Case (W, 2-1), who totally dominated Florida hitters, tossing six one hit innings, striking out five, walking three and out dueling Braves rehabbing starter Kevin Gausman (L, 0-1), who surrendered three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work.

  • Niko Hulsizer, LF – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – Los Angeles Dodgers –– 3-4, HR (3/18), 2B, 2R, 3RBi, K –– Since his call up to HiA June 20, the 22-year-old has posted a .292 batting average with three home runs, eight runs scored and 11 RBi in 13 games.  However, for the 2018 – 18th rounder out of Morehead State (KY), different league, same result. In 58 games with Midwest League Great Lakes, Hulsizer batted .268 with 17 doubles, 15 homers, 46 runs scored and 49 runs batted in. Despite the rather similar pound-for-pound game production, in other words, we may not have seen the best yet of the Dodgers unranked prospect now that he’s out of the MWL and in the high octane climate of the California League.
