July 2, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Marco Luciano, SS – AZL Giants Orange – San Francisco Giants –
    • – 3-4, 2 HR (5,6), 3R, 3RBi, BB, K –
      • There are two things about Luciano I’d like to point out. Now, this is strictly a matter of opinion, as I’m no expert. I simply go by the numbers, the talk I see and hear around the minor league game. The first thing is I don’t think the righty-swinging 17-year-old is long for the Arizona League; and two, if Luciano continues this level of production and all the hype over him is real, he could very well find himself in Tampa Bay super-prospect “Wander Franco” type territory sooner rather than later. So far, the 6’2″- 175 lb. Dominican Republic native has proven he’s on that path. Please for the love of all fantasy FAAB, if Luciano is available in your minor league-allowable leagues, Roster. Him. Immediately.

    • – 2-4, 2B, 2RBi, 2K –
      • – The 19-year-old Vargas cracked a single in the bottom of the third for his first ever hit in HiA after receiving a much deserved promotion from LoA Great Lakes. However, the Dodgers number 27 ranked prospect saved the best for last. With the Quakes down 1-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth, the Cuba native lined a one-out,  two-run double scoring first baseman Marcus Chu and shortstop Deacon Liput to lead the Quakes to a walk-off 2-1 victory over Cal League South division rival Lake Elsinore. Vargas received a promotion after  a 70 game set with Great Lakes of the Midwest League, where he batted .325 with 20 doubles, nine stolen bases and five homers, four of which came in his previous two games. The 6’3″- 205 lb. righty is also riding a 10 game hit streak and has collected a hit in 27 out of his last 31 games.

    • – 4-5, HR (1), 2 2B, 2R, RBi, K –
      • – Vaughn was considered the best bat in the 2019 draft class and he’s proving that those scouting reports were no joke. While at the University of California, he batted .377, clubbed 50 homers, struck out 72 times and took 116 walks in 156 games as a three year starter. In only two games as a pro, it hasn’t taken him long to establish himself as one of the more premiere hitters in the AZL, registering his first four-hit game, including his first home run of what should be many more to come.

Gulf Coast League:

  • Parker Phillips, LF – GCL Twins – Minnesota Twins –
    • – 6-7, HR (1), 3B, 2B, 4R, 3RBi –
      • The Twins 27th round draft pick last month was known for his huge power coming out of Austin Peay University (TN). In three years, the 6’5″- 240 lb, righty clubbed a total of 56 home runs in 164 games as a three-year starting first baseman, and blasted 25 homers his junior (and final) year before being drafted. However, one of the more standout career stats was the lone triple he registered as a freshman. Now that he’s a first year pro, you could technically call him a freshman, and it took him only six games to add another to his resume. He lined what some call the most difficult hit, a triple to right in the fourth inning versus the Rays, but Phillips opened his stat line with a home run in the first inning, collected a single in the fifth, the seventh, then completed his first career cycle with an eighth inning double in what ended up as a Twins 18-14 knock-em-out-drag-em-out slugfest win over the Tampa Bay.
