July 1, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Miguel Vargas, 2B – Great Lakes Loons – Los Angeles Dodgers –
    • – 4-6, 2 HR (4,5), 4R, 4RBi, SB (9) –
      • – For the second straight day, the Dodgers #27 ranked prospect (Pipeline) went yard twice, giving him five home runs on the season, and four home runs, eight runs scored, and eight RBi in his last two games. Vargas’ onslaught led Great Lakes to a 16-9 victory over Fort Wayne, and one of the best records in the Midwest League at 49-29, next to Quad Cities (HOU), who sit atop the league at 50-26.

California League:

  • Gareth Morgan, RF- Inland Empire 66ers – Los Angeles Angels –
    • – 4-5, 2 HR (10,11), 2B, 3R, 4RBi –
      • – The Angels free agent pick up (after being released by the Mariners in mid- April) clubbed his third home run in two days and logged his second two-homer game of the season in last night’s game versus Lancaster. The 6’4″- 220 lb. righty was batting .074 in eight games before his release, but upon becoming an Angel, in 18 games, he’s posted a slash line of .292/.321/.722/.1.403, while 10 of his 11 homers of the season have come in an Inland Empire uniform.
  • Casey Golden, RF – Lancaster Jethawks – Colorado Rockies –
    • – 3-3, 3R, 2RBi –
  • Ryan Vilade, SS – Lancaster Jethawks – Colorado Rockies –
    • – 2-3, 3B, R, RBi, BB, SB (14) –

  • Samuel Miranda, C – Salem Red Sox – Boston Red Sox –
    • – 2-4, HR (1), 3B, 2R, 3RBi, 2K –

Florida State League:

  • Samad Taylor, 2B – Dunedin Blue Jays – Toronto Blue Jays –
    • – 2-4, 2 HR (2,3) – 2R, 3RBi, 2K –
  • Jerar Encarnacion, RF – Jupiter Hammerheads – Miami Marlins –
    • – 2-4, 2B –
  • Dylan Busby, DH – Bradenton Marauders – Pittsburgh Pirates –
    • – 2-4, HR (17), R, RBi, K –
      • – Despite batting a meager .228 with 106 strikeouts in the Marauders 72 games this season, the 23-year-old third rounder (2017) out of Florida State belted his Florida State League leading seventeenth home run in Bradenton’s 3-2 win over Jupiter.

Midwest League:

  • Izzy Wilson, CF – Bowling Green Hot Rods – Tampa Bay Rays –

  • Freudis Nova, SS – Quad Cities River Bandits – Houston Astros –
    • – 3-5, 3 2B, 3R, RBi K, SB (2) –

South Atlantic League:

  • Braden Shewmake, DH – Rome Braves – Atlanta Braves –
    • – 2-3, 2B –
      • – Aside from going 0-3 in his first game as a pro, Atlanta’s twenty-first overall pick in the 2019 draft has a hit in every game this season (a 10-game hit streak) and all but two of Shewmake’s games have produced multiple hits. The Texas A&M product has three 3-hit games and six 2-hit efforts, including three in a row. With a freshman performance like this, it makes you wonder how long Atlanta may keep him in LoA. Plus. there’s no doubt that the 6’4″- 190 lb. lefty will enter next season as the Braves top overall shortstop prospect.
  • Nathan Eaton, 3B – Lexington Legends – Kansas City Royals –
    • – 2-4, 2B, 2R, BB, 2 SB (15,16) –
  • Brandon Lockridge, CF – Charleston RiverDogs – New York Yankees –
    • – 2-4, HR (11), 2R, RBi, K, SB (14) –
  • Melvin Novoa, DH – Hickory Crawdads – Texas Rangers –
    • – 2-4, HR (4), R, 3RBi –
  • Mason Martin, DH – Greensboro Grasshoppers – Pittsburgh Pirates –
    • – 1-2, HR (21), R, 4RBi, 3BB –
      • The 20-year-old lefty slugger out of Southridge HS (WA; 2017) blasted his twenty-first homer of the season, leading the South Atlantic League and pulling him into a five-way tie for fifth overall in the minors. If I was at the helm of the Pittsburgh organization for a day, I’d pull the trigger and send the 6’0″- 200 lb. lefty to HiA Bradenton immediately. It’s not like he hasn’t earned the opportunity.

New York – Penn League:

  • Ezequiel Duran, 2B – Staten Island Yankees – New York Yankees –
    • – 2-4, 2B, 2R, RBi, BB, K –

Northwest League:

  • Franklin Labour, RF – Salem-Keizer Volcanoes – San Francisco Giants –
    • – 2-4, 2 HR (6,7), 2R, 2RBi, BB, K –
      • – With his sixth and seventh home runs on the season in last night’s 7-5 victory over Spokane, Labour sits atop the Northwest League leaderboard in round-trippers as well as total bases (44). He also leads the league in runs scored (17), slugging percentage (.677) and OPS (1.077). The newly-turned 21 year old is definitely headed for a Northwest League all-star nod.

    • – 3-5, 3B, 2 2B, 3R –

Gulf Coast League:

  • Brett Baty, 3B – GCL Mets – New York Mets –
    • – 1-5, HR (1), R, 4RBi, K –
      • – The Mets number one overall draft choice in last month’s MLB First Year Player Draft led the GCL Mets to a win over the Astros yesterday, and he did it in grand fashion. After two Astros pitchers issued four walks, gave up a single, uncorked a wild pitch and surrendered two runs in the Mets half of the second, Baty came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded and proceeded to line the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for not only his first home run, but the first grand slam of his pro career. The Mets added one more run and finished the second with an 8-0 lead. The game remained scoreless for the next six innings. Both teams added a run each in the ninth, with the Mets finishing the day with a 4-2 record and a 9-1 victory.
