May 17, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

*Top Hitter of the Day*

  • Jose Caballero, 2B – Visalia Rawhide – Arizona Diamondbacks – – 0-5, R, BB, K, 2 SB (22,23) – – I’ll have a little fun today and go a little unconventional with today’s THOD choice. Caballero  –  pardon the pun  – is running away with the Cal League stolen base lead stealing his 22nd and 23rd base last night versus Lancaster. Rancho Cucamonga’s Brayan Morales sits at second place with 19, yet hasn’t stolen a base since May 4 versus San Jose. In the bottom of the third, Caballero drew a one-out walk, and eventually scored after stealing second. The Rawhide leadoff hitter stole third base after beginning the bottom of the thirteenth inning at second base with the score knotted at three a piece. But after two strikeouts by Jancarlos Cintron and Luis Alejandro Basabe, Caballero swiped third, yet the steal proved wasted as Cam Duzenack struck out swinging to end the inning.

California League:

  • Ariel Sandoval, LF – Modesto Nuts – Seattle Mariners –– 3-5, 2 2B, R, 3RBi, K –
  • Casey Golden, CF – Lancaster Jethawks – Colorado Rockies – – 1-6, HR (7), 2R, RBi, 5K, SB (6) –
  • Devin Davis, 1B – Inland Empire 66ers – Los Angeles Angels – – 2-3, HR (1), 2B, 2R, RBi, BB, K –
  • Lazaro Armenteros, LF – Stockton Ports – Oakland A’s – – 2-3, HR (9), R, 2RBi, BB, K – – Speaking of Cal League leads, the Cuban born Armenteros’ two-run blast in the  top of the first vaulted him in to the California League lead in round-trippers with nine.

Carolina League:

  • Samuel Huff, 1B – Down East Wood Ducks – Texas Rangers – – 1-4, HR (1/16), R, RBi, K – – In his eighth game after a well-earned promotion, Huff finally hit his first HiA homer, a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning off White Sox #26 ranked prospect Lincoln Henzman
  • Joantgel Segovia, LF – Carolina Mudcats – Milwaukee Brewers – – 3-5, HR (5), 2R, 3RBi

  • Jarren Duran, CF – Salem Red Sox – Boston Red Sox – – 2-5, 2B, R, 2RBi, BB, 2K – – Business as usual for the 2018 – 7th rounder (Long Beach State), as he rapped out another two hits last night against Frederick, and now leads all the minors with 61 hits. Our 2018 Organizational All-Star selection could be one of the fastest rising prospects of the 2019 season, and if he’s available in any deep-rooted,  minor league heavy fantasy leagues, add him to your roster immediately.

Florida State League:

  • Justin Toerner, RF – Palm Beach Cardinals – St. Louis Cardinals – – 3-4, R, RBi, BB, K – – Much like Policelli above, Toerner, a twenty-eighth round draft pick out of Cal State Northridge (2018), also broke out of a slump with three hits of his own last night. Heading into Friday’s matchup versus Bradenton, the 5’10”- 165 lb. lefty had four hits over his previous seven games (4-for-32; .174) “dropping” his batting average to .330; but he’s back up to .345 which places him second in the FSL behind teammate, catcher Julio Rodriguez, who sports a .357 average, and is currently riding an 18-game on-base streak dating back to April 18.

  • Jerar Encarnacion, RF – Clinton Lumberkings – Miami Marlins – – 1-4, HR (7), R, 3RBi, BB – – With his seventh home run on the season, the Marlins unranked prospect maintained his Midwest League total bases lead, four ahead of Cardinals phenom prospect Nolan Gorman
  • Brady Whalen, 1B – Peoria Chiefs – St. Louis Cardinals – – 3-5, 2 2B, R, 2RBi, K – – Last night, Peoria cleanup hitter Whalen, along with teammates Nolan Gorman and Delvin Perez, led the charge as the Chiefs blanked Quad Cities 8-0. Peoria sent 13 hitters to the plate, scoring all eight of their runs in the bottom of the sixth.
