April 24, 2019 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

  • Connor Kopach, 2B/SS – Modesto Nuts – Seattle Mariners – – 4-5, HR (2), 2B, 3R, 4RBi, K, 2 SB (6,7) – – The soon-to-be unqualified UTR prospect (turns 25 on August 4) had a night for the ages registering his first four-hit game as a pro and leading Modesto to an 8-7 victory over San Jose. Kopach hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first, then slapped a double to left in the top of the second, scoring catcher Nick Thurman, who led off the inning with a double, and shortstop Johnny Adams, who moved Thurman to third after a single, then stole second on reliever Joey Marciano. Kopach was at it again in the third poking a single to center, which scored right fielder Ariel Sandoval. Kopach rapped a single and stole second in the fifth, and ended his night with a strikeout in the top of the seventh. 

California League: 

  • Torii Hunter Jr., CF – Inland Empire 66ers – Los Angeles Angels – – 1-3, HR (1), R, RBi, BB, K

  • Seth Beer, LF – Fayetteville Woodpeckers – Houston Astros – – 2-4, 2B, R, RBi, BB – – The Astros number one draft choice out of Clemson last season has gone hitless in only one game dating back to April 11, when he went 0-3 April 20 against Carolina. He’s batting .391 in his last 13 games (18-for-46) and is now tied for second in the Carolina League in total bases with Lynchburg’s Oscar Gonzalez (39) behind Chicago’s Luis Robert, who’s been out of action since Winston-Salem’s April 20 double-header versus Potomac due to left hand contusion.

  • Brice Turang, SS – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – Milwaukee Brewers – – 2-4, 2 2B, 2R, BB, IBB, K – – Milwaukee’s number one draft selection in 2018 started out the season with eight hits in his first eleven games (.211), but has 11 hits in his last six (12-for-24; .500) and carries a near perfect BB:K ratio thus far (11:12). 

South Atlantic League: 

  • Mason Martin, 1B – Greensboro Grasshoppers – Pittsburgh Pirates – – 1-4, HR (5), R, 2RBi, K – Not only has the 2017 – 17th rounder collected eight hits in his last four games, but is also riding a four game home run streak, and has hit all five of this season’s homers in his last seven contests.  
  • Shane Matheny, SS – Augusta Greenjackets – San Francisco Giants – – 2-4, HR (4), 2B, 2R, RBi, BB – – The former Washington State Husky has two home runs in his last three games, has registered two hits in four out of his last five contests and leads all Sally League second basemen in total bases (36).
