Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – July 29, 2018

National League – Top Hitter of the Day

  • Ronny Brito, SS – Rookie Ogden Raptors (LAD) – Pioneer League
    • 3-4, HR (7), 2R, 8RBi, BB, SB (1)
    • “Third time’s a charm”  is the old saying. The 19-year-old Brito entered 2018 with a .232 batting average with four home runs in two seasons with both DSL squads, the AZL and a 16 game taste of Rookie Ogden to end his 2017 season. Brito seems like a different prospect in his third season. After batting an even .400 in eight games with the Dodgers new DSL Robinson affiliate to start the year, the 6’0″- 165 lb. righty was transferred (back) to Rookie Ogden and in only 27 games ranks second in RBi’s (34) is one of the Pioneer League leaders in home runs, OB% (.478) and currently holds a .331 batting average; 99 points higher than his career average coming into this season.

American League – Top Hitter of the Day

  • Ernie De La Trinidad, LF – HiA Fort Myers Miracle (MIN) – Florida State League
    • 3-4, HR (1/9), 2R, 3RBi, BB, K
    • Yesterday’s three hits by the 5’9″- 165 lb. UNLV draftee (2017-19th round), extended his current hit streak to 11 games. Equally as impressive, or even more so, is that July 13, July 1 and June 23 are the only three games in Trindad’s last 38 games where he hasn’t registered a hit.

Notes on Cardinals Montero, Rangers Altmann…

National League:

  • Luis Garcia, DH – HiA Potomac Nationals (WAS) – Carolina League
    • 4-5, 2 2B, 3R
  • Nick Banks, CF – HiA Potomac Nationals (WAS) – Carolina League
    • 3-4, 2B, 2R, 3RBi, BB
  • Andy Weber, SS – AZL Cubs1 (CHC) – Arizona League
    • 2-4, HR (2), 2B, 2R, RBi, BB, 2K
  • Pabel Manzanero, 1B/3B – Rookie Billings Mustangs (CIN) – Pioneer League
    • 3-5, 2B, R, 4RBi, BB
  • Elehuris Montero, 3B – LoA Peoria Chiefs (STL) – Midwest League
    • 4-5, 4 2B, 3R, 2RBi
    • In my humble opinion, there may not be a Cardinals hitter who’s stock has risen this season more than Montero. He came into the 2018 season as an unranked prospect in a few notable top prospect publications and all the 19-year-old has done in return is lead the Midwest League in hits (113), batting, (.323), total bases (186), SLG% (.531) and OPS (.913), while ranking in the league’s top five in runs scored, doubles, and home runs. Barring injury, if the 6’3″- 195 lb. Dominican doesn’t take home the Midwest League Most Valuable Player Award, it will be an absolute travesty.
  • Yariel Gonzalez, 2B – LoA Peoria Chiefs (STL) – Midwest League
    • 2-4, HR (9), 3R, 3RBi, BB
  • Nick Plummer, RF – LoA Peoria Chiefs (STL) – Midwest League
    • 2-3, HR (7), 3R, RBi, 2BB, SB (9)
  • Nolan Gorman, 3B – Rookie Johnson City Cardinals (STL) – Appy League
    • 4-5, HR (8), 2 2B, R, 4RBi
  • Donivan Williams, 2B – Rookie Johnson City Cardinals (STL) – Appy League
    • 2-4, HR (3), R, 4RBi
  • Mark Karaviotis, LF – HiA Visalia Rawhide (ARI) – Cal League
    • 5-5, HR (5), 2B, 2R, RBi
  • Zack Shannon, 1B – Rookie Missoula Osprey (ARI) – Pioneer League
    • 2-4, HR (6), 2B, 3R, 4RBi, K
  • Daniel Robinson, LF – Rookie Ogden Raptors (LAD) – Pioneer League
    • 3-4, 4R, RBi, 3BB, SB (6)
  • Dillon Paulson, DH – Rookie Ogden Raptors (LAD) – Pioneer League
    • 2-3, 2 2B, 4R, RBi, 3BB
  • Miguel Vargas, 1B – Rookie Ogden Raptors (LAD) – Pioneer League
    • 3-5, 4R, 2RBi, BB
  • Niko Hulsizer, RF – Rookie Ogden Raptors (LAD) – Pioneer League
    • 2-5, HR (5), 2B, 2R, 3RBi, BB, K
  • Sauryn Lao, 1B – AZL Dodgers (LAD) – Arizona League
    • 2-3, HR (3), R, 3RBi, BB, K, SB (4)
  • Niko Decolati, DH – Rookie Grand Junction Rockies (COL) – Pioneer League
    • 1-2, HR (5), 2R, 2RBi, 2BB

American League:

  • Kevin Padlo, DH – HiA Charlotte Stone Crabs (TB) – Florida State League
    • 2-5, HR (5), 2B, 2R, 3RBi, 2K
  • Cal Stevenson, LF – SS Vancouver Canadians (TOR) – Northwest League
    • 2-3, HR (1/1), R, 2RBi, 2BB
  • Miguel Jerez, LF – AZL Indians1 (CLE) – Arizona League
    • 3-4, HR (7), 2R, 2RBi
  • Tyler James, CF – Rookie Idaho Falls Chukars (KC) – Pioneer League
    • 2-4, 2B, 4R, 2BB, K, 2 SB (27,28)
  • Reed Rohlman, 1B – Rookie Idaho Falls Chukars (KC) – Pioneer League
    • 2-3, 2B, 3R, RBi, 3BB
  • Jose Caraballo, LF – Rookie Idaho Falls Chukars (KC) – Pioneer League
    • 3-6, HR (4), 2B, 3R, 6RBi, K, SB (2)
  • Chris Williams, 1B – Rookie Elizabethton Twins (MIN) – Appy League
    • 2-4, 2 HR (10,11), 2R, 3RBi
  • Jeremiah Jackson, SS – AZL Angels (LAA) – Arizona League
    • 2-3, HR (5), 2R, 3RBi, BB, K
  • Connor Kopach, DH – SS Everett AquaSox (SEA) – Northwest League
    • 2-3, HR (2), 2B, 2R, 4RBi, BB
  • Josh Altmann, RF/1B/P – HiA Down East Wood Ducks (TEX) – Carolina League
    • 2-5, HR (20), R, 3RBi, BB, 2K
    • Altman hit his 20th home run of the season, adding to his in-season career high, but the righty also suffered the loss as he took to the mound in the 12th inning and proceeded to issue an intentional walk, throw a wild pitch and surrender a single in successive batters resulting in three runs (two earned) and a loss, as the Keys defeated the Wood Ducks 9-8.
