National League – Top Hitter of the Day
- William Contreras, C – LoA Rome Braves (ATL) – Sally League
- 4-5, 3B, 2 2B, 2R, 5RBi
- The 20-year-old Venezuelan continues his stellar season with LoA Rome. Contreras collected four hits, added another five RBi’s to his season total and continues to pace South Atlantic League catching prospects in hits (87), batting, (.296), runs scored (51) and OPS (.815); and sits behind only the Royals MJ Melendez in total bases (145 – 134) and Colombia (NYM) catcher Scott Manea in on-base percentage (.386 – .360). There isn’t a skill Contreras lacks, yet he wouldn’t be mistaken for the most exciting catching prospect in the minors. I love him and I think with a few more years of growth, he could become Atlanta’s best homegrown catcher to come along since Atlanta drafted six-time Silver Slugger and seven-time All-Star Brian McCann in the 2nd round in 2002.
American League – Top Hitter of the Day
- Seuly Matias, RF – LoA Lexington Legends (KC) – Sally League
- 3-5, 2 HR (28,29), 2R, 4RBi, K
- The Royals current #3 prospect’s (MLB Pipeline) two bombs last night versus Asheville added to his overall minor league leading home run total, which now sits at 29. Matias might be batting .216 on the season while averaging over a strikeout per game, but if the trade off is power like this, I think the Royals organization will take it.
Notes on PHI’s Pujols, PIT’s Apostel, LAD’s Thomas, COL’s Diaz…
