Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – July 18, 2018

National League – Top Hitter of the Day

  • Kevin Woodall, RF – Rookie Johnson City Cardinals (STL) – Appy League3-3, 3 HR (4,5,6), 3R, 6RBi, 2BB
    • The colossal 6’6″ – 240 lb. 10th rounder out of Coastal Carolina (2018) came to the organization with immense (and obvious) power potential. With the Chanticleers, Woodall hit only three home runs in his his first two seasons, but the power arrived the following two years when Woodall blasted 37 round-trippers in his junior and senior seasons. Well, Woodall hit as many homers versus Bluefield (TOR) last night as he did as a freshman and sophomore combined (94 games). Woodall hit a 1-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning, walked in the 3rd, then hit a 1-out solo shot in the fifth to cut the Blue Jays lead to 5-3. Woodall came to the plate in the bottom of the 7th and with two outs and and a runner on second, crushed his third home run of the night, tying the game at five. Bluefield failed to score in the top of the 8th and with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Woodall drew a bases loaded walk to break the 5-5 tie. The following batter (Dariel Gomez) was the victim of an HBP which scored an insurance run. Bluefield failed to score in the top of the 9th, as the JC bullpen helped secure a 7-5 victory.

American League – Top Hitter of the Day

  • Corey Zangari, 1B – Rookie Great Falls Voyagers (CWS) – Pioneer League2-5, 2 HR (8,9), 2R, 4RBi, 2K – 14
    • After scanning through yesterday’s box scores, I was going to choose AZL Rangers catcher/DH Max Morales as today’s THOD. After all, he crushed two homers, a double and drove in six runs (vs. Giants Orange). Impressive. However, looking closely at Zangari, it wasn’t only his own 2-homer day that gave him today’s top spot, but it was who he’s hit those homers against. The 2015- 6th rounder is batting .471 versus the Orem Owls this season and seven out of Zangari’s nine home runs on the season have come against Orem pitching. And not only that, Zangari’s seven home runs have all come within his last eight games. In Zangari’s other 12 games this season, he’s batting .191.

    • It’s no surprise to see the Marlins 2018 – 2nd rounder make the HOD list. He has  pretty good bloodlines, as the 17-year-old draftee out of Encinal HS (CA) is the cousin of 3x All-Star, Silver Slugger winner, 4x Gold Glover, N.L. MVP and 2008 World Series Champion Jimmy Rollins
