National League – Top Hitter of the Day

• • The 2016 draftee out of Pearl River Community College (MS) registered the first 5-hit game of his pro career, helping lead the Timber Rattlers to a 19-5 beat down of division rival Peoria (STL) last night. The righty-swinging centerfielder has collected a hit in 14 out of his last 17 games (23-for-63/.365) and his seven triples on the season ranks one behind Midwest League leader Jean Carlos Arias (Cedar Rapids). But wow, when you look at Clark’s strikeouts (99 in 67 games), it sure makes you ponder how much more of a force the former 19th round pick could be if he turned a third or even a quarter of his K’s into a hit or a walk.  

American League – Top Hitter of the Day

• Michael Chavis, 3B – SS Lowell Spinners (BOS) – New York-Penn League3-4, HR (1), 2 2B, 2R, 2RBi, BB
• • After serving an 80-game PED suspension, Chavis returned to the organization on July 2 and was assigned to Short Season Lowell. He faced Connecticut (DET) for four games (2 home/2 away) and collected only two hits in 12 at-bats (.167). The 2014 – 1st rounder saw a promotion to Double-A Portland on July 7, but went hitless in eight at-bats vs the Hartford Yard Goats (COL). Well, the Sprayberry HS (Marietta, GA) alum could finally be shedding the rust, as he returned to Lowell last night and belted his first extra-bases of the season – a first inning double, a run-scoring double in the 3rd and an insurance homer in the 8th (a solo shot) – to help the Spinners secure a 9-6 victory over Hudson Valley (TB). Despite serving a suspension, to this day, Chavis claims his innocence.
