National League – Top Hitter of the Day
- Jean Selmo, RF – DSL Cardinals Blue (STL) – Dominican Summer League
- 3-4, HR (1), 2B, 4R, 3RBi, BB
- One thing you like to see with prospects is that steady climb through the system, from one level to the next; but sadly when a kid does well one season, but repeats a level the following year, he immediately gets that unspoken “Uh oh” asterisk attached to his name, with the insinuation that he’s under developing. Such is not the case with the 18 year old Selmo. Last year, the 6’2″- 190 lb. righty made his pro debut with the DSL Diamondbacks 2 roster, batting .232 with 15 extra base hits, six steals and 24 runs scored in 45 games. Nothing spectacular, but a base to work with from a 17-year-old. However, Arizona exposed the young Dominican to the Rule-5 draft and the Cardinals swooped in, then assigned him to their new DSL Cardinals Blue affiliate this season. As baseball fans, we’re all familiar with the “Cardinal Way” and upon looking at Selmo’s numbers, he’s clearly bought in, as he’s nearly doubled his production from last season in less than half the games. He’s batting .333, fifty percent of his hits have gone for extra bases, he averages exactly an RBi per game, where as he had only 17 in 45 games last season. Selmo has also increased his walk rate while slashing his strikeouts rate by nearly a third.
American League – Top Hitter of the Day
- Griffin Conine, RF – SS Vancouver Canadians (TOR) – Northwest League
- 3-4, 2 HR (3,4), 2B, 2R, 3RBi, BB
- After logging two games in the GCL to begin his pro career, the son of former major leaguer Jeff Conine, the next generation Conine saw a promotion to Short Season Vancouver and this far has been one of the best pound-for-pound producers in the Northwest League, despite registering only 13 games. The 2018 – 2nd rounder out of Duke came with a scouting report of a legit hit tool (with what has been deemed “ridiculous bat speed” – obviously given his bloodlines), an above average arm, plus power potential and above average speed. A great breakdown of Conine’s potential by veteran scout Ted Lekas can be seen here. Keep an eye on Griffin. If he continues his pace, he could easily find himself in several Blue Jays top 5 or 10 postseason top prospect lists.
