Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – July 4, 2018

Here’s hoping everyone had a great and safe Fourth of July. Some say the food is the best part of the holiday. Some say it’s the parades. But probably the top answer would be the fireworks displays, and if you enjoy those, and are a baseball fan, plenty of hitters provided a ton of fireworks from the Independence Day games. However, my apologies for not highlighting some of these hitters with more editorials today. The reason: When you add an air conditioner that stopped working to the current heat wave, you get a priority DIY project for the day. Let’s hope that my bats stay hot, and I can soon report in much cooler conditions. Wish me luck.

I’m sure upon scanning today’s list, you’ll see who provided the heat. Thanks for reading.

National League – Top Hitter of the Day

  • Kyle McPherson, SS – SS Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (SF) – Northwest League
    • The 2017 – 26th rounder out of James Madison fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle. The 5’11” – 180 lb. righty began his day with a walk in the 2nd, and ended up scoring on a fielders choice. McPherson hit a one-out double to left in the 3rd, followed by two-out triple in a four-run 4th inning, blasted a 5th inning grand slam where the Volcanoes scored an additional six runs, and McPherson ended his night with a fly out to right in the 7th.

He didn’t hit his first home run of the season until his 15th game, a solo shot in the 5th inning vs. Potomac on May 10, then went homerless until May 20, his first 2-home run game of the season vs. Myrtle Beach. The 24-year-old suffered a home run draught until June 15, single home run game, a 2-run homer in the 6th vs. Down East, then saw another single homer game June 23 at Salem, then June 27 at home vs. Winston-Salem. But he’s followed that with four 2-home run games in his last seven contests.
