Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – June 29, 2018

National League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Max George, 2B – HiA Lancaster Jethawks (COL) – Cal League
    • 2-4, 2 HR (6,7), 2R, 2RBi, K

American League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Ronaldo Hernandez, C – LoA Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) – Midwest League
    • 3-4, HR (13), 2 2B, 4R, 2RBi, BB
    • The 20-year-old from Colombia makes his 10th appearance on the HOD list this season (along with his 2017 UTR OAS honor) as he’s actually gotten stronger at the plate as the season’s progressed. The 6’1″ – 185 lb. righty batted .305 in April, slipped a tad in May (.269), but belted his first three homers on the season. However, Hernandez has punished Midwest League pitching in June, batting .367 with 10 home runs, driving in 26 of his 57 RBis and scoring 20 of his 43 runs on the season. Oh, he’s also posted a .988 fielding percentage along with a 33 percent caught-stealing rate. So, unfortunately for Midwest League opponents, Hernandez shows zero signs of slowing-down; and by season’s end he should be one of (if not the) top catching prospect(s) in all the minors and could soon see a much-deserved promotion to HiA Charlotte.

Notes on the Phillies Duran, Dodgers Bannon, Baltimore’s Garcia, Toronto’s Lopez…

 National League:

  • Chase Chambers, 1B – SS Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) – New York-Penn League
    • 3-5, 2B, 2R, 3RBi, 2K
  • Anthony Dirocie, CF – Rookie Kingsport (NYM) – Appy League
    • 4-4, HR (2), R, 2RBi
  • Andres Regnault, C – DSL Mets1 (NYM) – Dominican Summer League
    • 3-4, HR (3), R, 2RBi
  • Rodolfo Duran, DH – LoA Lakewood BlueClaws (PHI) – Sally League
    • 3-3, HR (11), 2R, RBi, BB
    • Today is the 20-year-old Duran’s third consecutive appearance on the HOD list. The 5’9″ – 180 lb. catcher has collected 9 hits in his last four games (.750) and is 16 for his last 28 (.571) over his last nine, with five of his 11 home runs on the season coming in his last eight games. I tabbed Duran as a “Keep an eye on…” player inside the Phillies 2016 UTR OAS list and it looks like he might be living up to the projection.
  • Grant Fennell, LF – AZL Cubs2 (CHC) – Arizona League
    • 4-5, 2 2B, R, 2RBi
  • Ricardo Verenzuela, CF – DSL Cubs1 (CHC) – Dominican Summer League

  • Rylan Bannon, DH – HiA Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (LAD) – Cal League
    • 3-5, HR (18), 2R, RBi
    • The 2017 – 8th rounder out of Xavier overtook the Cal League lead in home runs last night with his 18th. But what’s intriguing is Bannon’s third inning homer came off rehabbing Angels starter Garrett Richards, who took the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

    • 1-3, HR (9), R, 3RBi, BB

  • Keyberth Mejias, C – DSL Giants (SF) – Dominican Summer League
    • 3-4, 3B, 2R, 2RBi, BB

American League:

  • Wilson Garcia, 1B – HiA Frederick Keys (BAL) – Carolina League
    • 2-4, 2 HR (11,12), 2R, 4RBi, BB
    • In an early-May player-cash swap, the Phillies sent the 24-year-old Venezuelan to Baltimore for cash, and in his last season as a UTR qualifier, Garcia sure is making things fun. He has at least one hit in 11 out of his last 12 games, but more impressive are is his five home runs in his last three games, with two consecutive 2-homer games, coming against Winston-Salem pitching.
  • Bobby Dalbec, 3B – HiA Salem Sox (BOS) – Carolina League
    • 2-4, HR (15), 2B, R, 3RBi, K

  • Bryan Lizardo, 1B – SS Vancouver Canadians (TOR) – Northwest League
    • 4-4, 2B, 3R, 3RBi
  • Brett Wright, C – SS Vancouver Canadians (TOR) – Northwest League
    • 2-4, HR (1), 2R, 2RBi, BB

  • Otto Lopez, 2B – Rookie Bluefield Blue Jays (TOR) – Appy League
    • 5-6, 3B, 2 2B, 2R, 3RBi, SB (1)
    • The 19-year-old Dominican led Rookie Bluefield’s hit barrage last night with five of the Blue Jays 20 hits in a 21-11 beating over Greeneville (CIN). Ten of Bluefield’s 20 hits were for extra bases, while also drawing 13 walks to seven strikeouts.
