Although the idea of sleeping in is stripped away, it’s good to be back as early morning tracking takes center stage once again. Not sure about Jim, but it takes me awhile to get back into the swing of things (no pun intended) after taking a few days off. The Dominican Summer League must have understood with only one daily qualifier from a very unsettled schedule regarding the weather. With all leagues running at full-throttle, I’ll be upping my daily criteria. So, if my daily lists appear shorter in overall length, they definitely won’t lack in quality daily performances. 

Boston was great. U2 was even more great, but it feels just as great to be back with Jim and I now entering the home stretch of our tracking season.

National League – Top Hitter of the Day: 

• Diego Rincones, LF – SS Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (SF) – Northwest League
  • 4-5, HR (2), 2 2B, R, 5RBi, K 
  • Making a slow methodical climb through the Giants system is the 6’0″- 175 lb. Venezuelan. Staring his pro career in 2016 as a 17-year-old in the DSL, he batted .244 with two home runs and 30 RBi in 58 games. Not eye-popping numbers, but enough for the Giants to want to test him with an assignment to the AZL in 2017, which proved successful with Rincones batting .308 with three home runs and 34 RBis in 11 less games than in 2016. Only nine games into the Northwest League schedule, Rincones is on pace to smash his previous in-season peripherals. So far, he leads the NWL in batting (.529), hits (18), OPS (1.308) and total bases (27), and at 19 years old, sits two years younger than the league’s average age. His tool bag of skills might not come as full as other prospects, but he’s proven so far that he has the ability to play above his scouting report of just average athleticism and questionable power, however, he’s playing above his noted bat-to-ball skills and good instincts at the plate. 

American League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • I’m going to take a guess, a prediction of sorts, that once the Astros first round draft choice from the 2018 draft makes it to the majors, he might very well lead not only Astros jersey sales, but all of major league baseball. I mean, what goes better with  baseball than Beer?? Regardless of the name, the 6’3″ – 195 lb. former Clemson Tiger has begun his pro career in rather solid fashion, currently leading the NYPL in home runs and ranking within the league top five in total bases (20) and top 10 in OPS (1.114).
