Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – June 10, 2018

*The Dominican Summer League has every Sunday off*

National League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Esteury Ruiz, DH – LoA Fort Wayne TinCaps (SD) – Midwest League
    • 3-5, HR (6), 2B, 5R, 4RBi, BB
    • The Padres #10 (Pipeline) and #15 (BA) prospect had his best day at the plate as a pro Sunday, blasting his 6th home run on the season, scoring five runs and driving in four against Lansing, one of the top teams in the Midwest League. Ruiz was named MVP of the Arizona League last season after being traded from Kansas City in the deal that brought him, Travis Wood and Matt Strahm to the Padres for pitchers Trevor Cahill, Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter. Ruiz projects to hit for modest power and has average speed, but is a base stealing artist with a dynamic bat.

American League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Brewer Hicklen, CF – LoA Lexington Legends (KC) – Sally League
    • 2-5, 2 HR (5,6), 2R, 5RBi, K
    • The 2017 – 7th rounder out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) came to the Royals with a profile of a great athlete with above-average raw power and plus speed. In two seasons with the UAB Blazers, he batted .307 with 10 homers, 57 RBi and 39 stolen bases. The 6’2″ – 208 lb. righty never missed a step after landing in pro ball. In a combined 39 games with the AZL Royals and Rookie Idaho Falls in 2017, Hicklen batted .321 with four home runs, 23 RBi and 16 stolen bases. This season, his first in full-season ball, Hicklen is more than holding his own as one of the Sally League leaders in batting (.323) and sits in the top five in overall offensive, pound-for-pound production based on games played. He’s unranked in all top publication’s top prospect lists. Ageism is a thing.

National League:

  • Brett Cumberland, C – HiA Florida FireFrogs (ATL) – Florida State League
    • 2-4, HR (6), 2B, 2R, RBi, K
  • Braxton Davidson, 1B – HiA Florida FireFrogs (ATL) – Florida State League
    • 2-3, HR (8), 2B, 3R, 2RBi, BB
    • Davidson hits a home run on consecutive days  – his third in two days  –  and is showing signs of breaking out of not only a season slump, but a slumping minor league career thus far. The 6’3″ 220 lb. lefty has six hits in his last nine at-bats with six runs scored and seven RBi’s
  • Raysheandall Michel, LF – HiA Florida FireFrogs (ATL) – Florida State League
    • 1-2, HR (1), 2R, RBi, BB, SB (1)
  • Jhailyn Ortiz, RF – LoA Lakewood BlueClaws (PHI) – Sally League
    • 3-5, HR (4), 2B, 2R, RBi, SB (1)
    • It’s been a slowly progressive season for the the 19-year-old Dominican. He began the season batting a putrid .158 in April (9-57) and was sidelined after April 23 with a non-throwing shoulder injury. He spent nearly a month off the diamond, returning May 21 versus Hagerstown. The injury seemed to be behind him, as Ortiz batted .304 in all of May, but the young power prospect collected only three extra-base hits. Despite going hitless June 1 against Hickory, Ortiz’s June is more of what we want to see, as he has 15 hits in his last 31 at-bats (.484) over his last eight games. I”d still like to see the 6’3″ – 215 lb. teenager show more power and cut down his strikeouts, but it looks like Ortiz is showing glimpses of the bat speed and approach the Phillies saw back in 2015 when they signed him to a whopping $4.01M deal.
  • Carter Kieboom, SS – HiA Potomac Nationals (WAS) – Carolina League
    • 2-5, HR (10) R, RBi, K, SB (6)
  • Jake Noll, 3B – HiA Potomac Nationals (WAS) – Carolina League
    • 3-4, HR (7), 2R, 2RBi, BB, K, SB (2)

    • 1-4, HR (4), 2R, RBi, BB
  • Ryan Grotjohn, LF – HiA Visalia Rawhide (ARI) – Cal League
    • 1-5, HR (1), R, 3RBi, K
  • Renae Martinez, C – LoA Kane County Cougars (ARI) – Midwest League
    • 2-4, HR (5), 2B, R, 3RBi, 2K

    • 1-4, HR (16), R, 3RBi

    • 2-4, HR (10), 3R, RBi

    • 3-4, HR (3), 2Bm R, 3RBi, BB

    • 3-5, 2 2B, 2R, 2RBi, K
  • Carl Chester, CF – LoA Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) – Midwest League
    • 1-5, HR (3), R, 3RBi, 2K
