• Stir Candelario, RF – DSL Rays1 (TB) – Dominican Summer League

  • Tabbed as a top international free-agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2017, the Rays signed Candelario in late March of this year, assigning him to the DSL Rays1 squad. It’s only been five games so far, but the 6’0″ – 185 lb. righty has already walked four times to three strikeouts, carries a .375 batting average and three of his six hits have been doubles.  The 17-year-old is known to have a canon arm from right field and has the potential to hit for plus-plus power. He falls into the category of the “potential middle-of-the-order run producer who struggles with off-speed stuff”, but keep an eye on him. You could certainly add Candelario to your deep minor league roster now based on his projection alone, but you know how it works here. If he continues to make the UTR THOD list, which is obviously based on performance, that would be the best time to add him. So, place him on your watch list.

  • I was asked the other day why Listi, a 2017 – 17th rounder out of Dallas Baptist, hasn’t made my list more often. Despite Listi being a 2017 draft choice, he’s also a 24 year old in HiA, so he Should be killing pitching at this level. The average age of a major league baseball player is 27.6 years of age, therefore, I have to take a diluted approach to hitters like him when promoting them to readers. It makes more sense to place a 17 year old in the DSL on my list who’s producing 75 percent of what Listi is, than a kid who’s five months away from being 25 years old.
