- Baez came blazing out of Cuba and never took a foothold on the pages here at UTRMinors. After playing in the leagues in Cuba in 2014-15, Baez didnt record any stats in 2016 and found his way to the U.S. in 2017, making one start in the Arizona League in late June. He came state-side with some hype, so he was thrust into LoA Fort Wayne and quickly started rising to top prospect status. Three starts into his Fort Wayne stint, my system screamed at me to stash Baez on my keeper roster. I was successful before our league’s FAAB closed at the end of July. Baez took a perfect game into the 5th innings last night and threw six scoreless, his 4th of the season. The Padres organization is taking things slow with the 6’8″ 220 lb righty, as he has only seen three outings past 6 innings in 18 career starts. His skills and repertoire are proven, but durability will be the watch word going forward. More innings in store will mean that Baez, come seasons-end, will be named to the UTR Organizational All-Star roster.
- 22nd round pick in 2017 is getting his first opportunity to start in his first full season. The 6’1″ 177 lb righty made his debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2017 where he made 11 appearances (12.2 IP) and posted a 0.71 ERA. Last night’s outing didn’t have Junk throwing “junk”, as 73% of his pitches went from strikes. He has a power arm that rifles his fastball in the mid-90’s and can touch 98 mph. There is an unknown surrounding his secondary offerings, but its too early to say whether his ceiling will be a starter.
