May 31, 2018 – Under the Radar Pitcher Performances

TOP NL UTR PITCHING PERFORMANCE

RHP Marcos Diplan (HiA Carolina – Milwaukee) 21 years old
5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER,  2 BB, 10 K, 3.16 ERA, Win 2-2
  • Diplan struggled with command during his May 20th start when he allowed 4 walks in the first two innings. The Carolina manager pulled the 6’0″ 170 lb righty for Alec Kenilvort to begin the third inning. Good news was that though Diplan battled, he didnt allow a run. With last night’s outing, the Dominican native has extended a scoreless streak to 13 innings and only 3 earned runs over his last 24.2 innings. The Brewers have pushed Diplan since acquiring him from the DSL Rangers and bringing him to the U.S. in 2015. That season he worked 50.1 innings as a swingman for the Helena Brewers in the Pioneer League. The following season he quickly move across three levels to HiA Brevard County. He made my 2016 UTR Organizational All-Star for the Brewers. Its was Diplan’s first time touching double-digits K’s since his days in the DSL when he struck out 11 hitters near the end of the season. The #22 ranked prospect needs to reign in his command to remain as a starter.

TOP AL UTR PITCHING PERFORMANCE

RHP Brian Howard (HiA Stockton – Oakland) 23 year old
5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 2.72 ERA, Win 5-3 (Relief appearance of Rehab start)
  • I usually reserve mentions from relief appearances of a rehab start to below. It was a slow night for American League pitchers last night, so the 2018 “One to Watch” gets top billing today. The 8th round pick in 2017 (TCU) matched his season/career high 10 strikeouts after relieving Paul Blackburn with two outs in the third. The lanky (6’9″ 185 lb) right-hander has had some up and down outings this month, but was good enough to be the Athletics Top UTR “Minors” American League Pitcher for April 2018.
