National League – Top Hitter of the Day:
- Rylan Bannon, 3B – HiA Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (LAD) – Cal League3-4, HR (12), 2B, 2R, 2RBi, K
-
- Despite taking a fact-based approach to our reporting, even we sometimes look at the “what could have been”, or the “on-pace” projection if you will on a player by using the law of (factual) averages. Bannon, a 2017 – 8th rounder out of Xavier University, registered quite a season in his pro debut with Rookie Ogden (Pioneer League) despite playing in only 40 games. The 5’10” – 180 lb. righty batted .336 with 10 home runs and 30 RBi. But, using the law of Bannon’s per-game averages, let’s look at what he could have produced had he played a full Pioneer League season (77 games) Bannon was on pace to collect 96 hits, which would have ranked second in the league, hit 15 doubles, belt 20 home runs, which would have tied him for first with Colorado prospect Casey Golden, score 75 runs scored (first overall), collect 58 RBi (tied for fourth), and steal 10 bases. The Dodgers felt confident enough for Bannon to leap frog LoA Great Lakes and assign him to HiA Rancho Cucamonga in 2018, and he hasn’t missed a beat. He came out of Xavier with above-average power and speed and so far he’s lived up to his scouting report. He currently ranks second in the Cal League in homers, RBi (35) and second in total bases (107) behind San Diego prospect Buddy Reed (107), who ranks third in the minors (overall) with 24 stolen bases.
American League – Top Hitter of the Day:
- Jose Miranda, 3B – LoA Cedar Rapids Kernels (MIN) – Midwest League3-5, HR (4), 2 2B, R, 6RBi, K
-
- The bottom third (top 30) prospect for the Twins (BA #24; MLB Pipeline #28), has been incredibly streaky this season. He’s batting .471 in his last four games, registering his first two 3-hit games of the season, but his six RBi’s last night vs. Wisconsin equalled what he collected in his previous 15 games.
National League:
Drew Waters, CF – LoA Rome Braves (ATL) – Sally League 2-5, 2 2B, 2R, 2RBi
-
- I love Waters. Already a 7-time UTR Hitter of the Day selection this season and UTR Organizational All-Star from 2017, Waters is rapidly climbing up prospect rankings and sits within my top 40 overall minor league hitters. In the month of May, Waters has failed to collect a hit in only three matchups, and has batted .325 for the month after a horrid month of April where he produced a .237 batting average.
