National League – Top Hitter of the Day:
- Starling Heredia, DH – LoA Great Lakes Loons (LAD) – Midwest League
- 3-5, HR (6), 2 2B, R, 6RBi
- In this day of the minor league prospect, as baseball fans, we are inundated with the future of the game. And rightfully so. Take the Nationals Juan Soto for example, the Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Both are only 19 years of age, (19!!!), absolutely killing baseballs. They’re playing the game and, as hitters, being treated by opposing pitchers as if they’ve been playing at the highest level for a decade. It’s an exciting time to be a fan. However, where there are the 19-year-old Soto’s and Guerrero’s, there’s also a downside to being a teenager trying to fight through (and learn) the game. After going 3-for-45 with 16 strikeouts in his previous 12 games (.067), Heredia, a 19-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, showed what he’s capable of last night vs South Bend. After grounding into a double play in his first at-bat (2nd inning), Heredia laced a double to left in the 4th, smacked a 3-run double to right in the 6th, then capped off his night with a 2-run homer in the 8th. This is what Heredia is capable of. Could he give you fits as a fan/fantasy owner? Yes, but again, he’s 19. The expectations have to tempered in the light of the Sotos, the Vlad Jr’s for those who are being overshadowed and struggling, but still dripping with tools.
American League – Top Hitter of the Day:
- Bubba Thompson, LF – LoA Hickory Crawdads (TEX) – Sally League
- 4-5, HR (2), 2B, 3R, 2RBi, SB (5)
- The Rangers #1 pick in 2017 out of McGill-Toolen HS (AL) is holding his own as a (ready??) 19-year-old in LoA. The 6’2″-190 lb. righty is batting .279 and despite the low stolen base total, Thompson is considered the fastest, most athletic player in the entire Texas organization, who also provides plus-plus defense.
