Under the Radar Hitters of the Day – May 22, 2018

National League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Eduardo Diaz, CF – LoA Kane County Cougars (ARI) – Midwest League4-4, HR (1), 2 3B, 3R, 4RBi
    • One of the Diamondbacks top outfield prospects (BA #7, MLB Pipeline #11), Diaz showed last night what the organization hope(d) to see coming off a 2017 season where he batted .312 with seven home runs, 58 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. Looking at his scouting report/skill set, the 6’2″- 175 lb. Venezuelan is considered one of the more toolsy position players in the entire Arizona system, given that his game “is built on aggressiveness” (BA). One might think he’s pressing, which is the cause for his struggles, as he’s batting a paltry .212 with only five extra base hits and a horrid 19:1 K:BB ratio. Diaz just might need more time to cook and the wait could be worth it.

American League – Top Hitter of the Day:

  • Chris Clare, SS – HiA Frederick Keys (BAL) – Carolina League3-3, HR (2), 3B, 3R, 3RBi, 2BB

National League:

Jefrey Ramos, LF – LoA Rome Braves (ATL) – Sally League 3-5, 2B, 2R, 2RBi, K

  • Justin Smith, RF – LoA Rome Braves (ATL) – Sally League 1-5, HR (3), 2R, 3RBi, 2K
  • Joe Dunand, SS – HiA Jupiter Hammerheads (MIA) – Florida State League3-4, HR (6), R, 2RBi

  • Hendrik Clementina, C – LoA Dayton Dragons (CIN) – Midwest League 3-4, HR (9), 2B, 2R, 2RBi, K
    • One of the more frustrating things to witness is when a prospect’s growth is slowed by injuries. Reds top catching prospect Tyler Stephenson has suffered his fair share since being drafted eleventh overall in the 2015 draft. (A concussion and left wrist injury in 2016; right thumb ligament in 2017). However, he’s remained injury-free so far in 2018 and the organization is reaping the benefits, as the hefty 6’4″- 225 lb. righty is batting .297 with four home runs, 24 RBi’s and 25 runs scored in 39 games for HiA Daytona. It’s this production along with the 2017 trade (with the Dodgers) that brought catcher Hendrik Clementina into Cindy that’s given the system a nice problem to have. The 2013 international signee out of Curacao batted .275 with 12 home runs and 76 RBi’s in 143 career games with the Dodgers organization, but has kicked it into a higher gear with Cincinnati, batting .298 with 17 homers and 73 RBi’s in 38 less games.
