- The Kansas City Royals not only sit in last place in the A.L. Central, but their 14-33 win-loss record is currently the worst in all of major league baseball. However, upon scanning their minor league levels, a lot of help is on the way. Despite 2017 – 1st rounder Nick Pratto and outfielders Khalil Lee and Seuly Matias receiving most of the press, it’s their 2017 second rounder that deserves equal praise. Melendez, an ultra-toolsy catcher, comes with a defense-first profile (good footwork and lateral movement with soft hands and a strong arm; posting pop times below 2.0), but his bat has taken a big step forward this season. In his 2017 pro debut with the AZL Royals, the Daytona Beach, FL native batted .262 with four home runs and 30 RBi’s. The 6’1″- 185 lb. lefty is hitting .271 so far this season, but in 16 less games against much tougher pitching this season, Melendez has nearly doubled his 2017 extra-base percentage (.341 in 2017), as 21 of his 32 hits on the year have gone for extra-bases (.656).
