- It’s crystal clear that Bo Bichette is the future at shortstop for the Blue Jays. The 20-year-old is more than holding his own for Double-A New Hampshire batting .272 with nine stolen bases and 25 runs scored in 30 games. But, there may not be a player in the Toronto system who’s improved their stock more than 2017 -4th rounder Kevin Smith. He came into 2018 ranked #28 (Baseball America) and #19 (MLB Pipeline) respectively after batting .271 with 25 doubles and nine stolen bases for Rookie Bluefield (Appy League). Smith came out of the University of Maryland as a defense-first player with holes in his swing and in his pro debut he whiffed 70 times to only 16 walks (an over 4:1 ratio), but he’s closed that gap considerably this season drawing nearly as many walks in 33 games (11) as he did all last season (61). In short, he’s cut his K rate nearly in half while raising his batting average 105 points. Could be time to add Smith to your minor league (deep?) sleeper list.
