April 14, 2018 – Under the Radar Pitcher Performances

I want to begin today with a really feel-good story. Back in 2014, I was able to see St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Daniel Poncedeleon during his time with Short-season State College. He went on to have a solid debut season with the Spikes, and was named to my inaugural UTR Organizational All-Star roster for the Cards. The 9th round pick (2014) was then named as a UTR “One to Watch” for the 2015 season. The future was looking bright, as the righty was assigned to begin 2016 with Double-A Springfield, and continued to excel. But tragedy occurred last May when Poncedeleon was struck in the head by a comebacker and was rushed to the hospital for emergency brain surgery. Miraculously, the 26 year-old has returned to the mound with Triple-A Memphis this season, and last night posted a career-high with 12 strikeouts. In 3 appearances thus far, Poncedeleon has put up a 0.82 ERA ( 1 ER in 11 IP). Here’s the story from Milb.com’s Josh Horton.

  • Avila has been a UTR mainstay since his debut back in 2015. That season he was with the Washington Nationals and was named to their UTR Organizational All-Star roster. He was my 2016 “One to Watch” and would have, once again, been UTR-OAS at the end of season, if he hadn’t been traded to San Diego. He earned a “Watch Worthy” notation after last season, as he solidified another UTR-OAS spot with the Padres.
