June 7, 2017 – Under the Radar Pitcher Performances

Recently, HiA pitchers enjoyed the spotlight with the LoA League having the day off. Well today it’s the pitchers of the Midwest and South Atlantic Leagues getting the sole focus, as the California League had the night off and the Carolina & Florida State Leagues only had one game played, with no pitcher qualifying.

I mentioned the other day about the Rookie Leagues starting-up next week and that the DSL began play earlier this week. This will create a format change to my daily posts, in highlighting the best performance from each League. Marc posted yesterday about how he will handle the Dominican Sumer League. The stats from the DSL are now consistently flowing, so below I have listed the top DSL pitchers from the past days and will post each day here on out. You will see that the National League pitchers are out to a nice start in the DSL.

  • O’Reilly gets his 4th win in as many decisions and pulls his ERA below 2.00 after allowing the most earned runs (3) of his career during his last start. The 27th round selection from 2016 was moved into the Chiefs rotation in early May and rolled to a 3-1 record and 1.83 ERA. In those 34.1 innings, O’Reilly posted a 37:1 K:BB rate and 0.76 WHIP. He went the distance for the first time last night, but almost pulled that feat on May 20th, when he took a no-hit bid into the 9th innings; but was yanked after allowing a base hit. O’Reilly was just named to the Cardinal’s Top UTR Pitcher for May, which was posted last night. This is the 2nd UTR-POD mention for O’Reilly – May 20th.

  • The River Bandits have been utilizing LaRue as a swingman, but he’s proving to be solid in the starting role. In 8 starts, the 14th round pick (2016) is 6-1 with a 2.00 ERA and quite stingy allowing only 27 hits over 45 innings. In short stints from the relief role, the righty has given up 9 hits over 12.2 innings (3 appearances) and a 2.84 ERA. This is his first full season after seeing only 4 appearances across two levels in 2016 with the GCL Astros and Appy League Greeneville.
