UTRMinors – American League Top Pitchers – July 2016

The American League for July will wrap up my in-season breakdowns from each month. If you missed my past lists or if you want to print them for comparison while doing your off-season work…here’s the link for each month:

April – National LeagueAmerican League
May – National LeagueAmerican League
June – National LeagueAmerican League

Daily in-season tracking will end this week, with the last post on Sunday August 14th. From there…it’s on to the off-season schedule to name each organization’s Under The Radar-Organizational All-Stars, followed by the listing of the 2017 “Ones To Watch”, which is right around the start of Spring Training. Don’t forget to follow/bookmark our site and follow us on Twitter (links on the right) to keep up to date.

Baltimore
Dominican Summer League
RHP Hector Guance – 21 years old
July stats: 3-1, 2.32 ERA, 31 IP, 25 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 14 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 4-3, 2.42 ERA, 52 IP, 41 H, 14 ER, 11 BB, 27 K

Rookie Leagues
RHP Jhon Peluffo (NY-Penn League Aberdeen) 19 years old
July stats: 2-0, 1.96 ERA, 23 IP, 17 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 23 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-1, 3.41 ERA, 31.2 IP, 26 H, 12 ER, 8 BB, 31 K in 7 starts
Peluffo was just promoted to LoA Delmarva….and don’t ask how his first start there went  (7 ER in 3.2 IP). He was on my International Watch list for 2016 back in March.

L0A/HiA
RHP Cristian Alvarado (LoA Delmarva) 21 years old
July stats: 2-3, 4.38 ERA, 24.2 IP, 31 H, 12 ER, 4 BB, 19 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 8-7, 3.42 ERA, 113 IP, 111 H, 43 ER, 23 BB, 118 K in 21 starts
Alvarado had his worse month since April, but nobody stepped up to unseat him from repeating. My 2015 “One to Watch” choice is having a solid year.

Boston
Dominican Summer League
RHP Ritzi Mendoza – 20 years old
July stats: 3-0, 0.33 ERA, 27.2 IP, 14 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 17 K in 5 starts
Like a fine wine…Mendoza is getting better, but let’s bring him state-wide to see whether he has the pedigree to be top shelf. Its two-in-a-row for Ritzi.

Rookie Leagues
RHP Daniel Gonzalez (NY-Penn League Lowell / LoA Greenville) 20 years old
July stats: 3-2, 2.14 ERA, 33.2 IP, 28 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 30 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 6-5, 3.72 ERA, 87 IP, 88 H, 36 ER, 20 BB, 73 K in 17 appearances in 16 starts
Gonzalez worked his way back to LoA Greenville where things didn’t go well back in April.

 L0A/HiA
LHP Matt Kent (HiA Salem) 23 years old
July stats: 2-2, 3.47 ERA, 36.1 IP, 34 H, 14 ER, 8 BB, 30 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 8-6, 3.63 ERA, 129 IP, 145 H, 52 ER, 27 BB, 93 K in 22 starts
The Texas A&M Aggie (13th Rd-2015) repeats as a top UTR Red Sox

Cleveland
Dominican Summer League
RHP Luis Araujo – 20 years old
July stats: 2-0, 1.19 ERA, 22.2 IP, 15 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 21 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 3-0, 1.01 ERA, 35.2 IP, 19 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 33 K in 11 appearances with 5 starts
A different Luis this month, but Luis Oviedo didn’t miss by much.

Rookie Leagues
LHP Francisco Perez (AZL Indians) 19 years old
July stats: 4-0, 1.86 ERA, 29 IP, 19 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 25 K in 5 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 5-1, 2.53 ERA, 42.2 IP, 31 H, 12 ER, 14 BB, 33 K in 8 appearances with 6 starts
Last month I had to choose a non-UTR pitcher (Triston McKenzie) because no other pitcher scored enough and it was better than not mentioning anybody. There were two that I thought would probably make this month’s list in Micah Miniard and Felix Tati, but Perez came out of no-where.

L0A/HiA
RHP Brock Hartson (LoA Lake County / HiA Lynchburg) 22 years old
July stats: 2-2, 2.67 ERA, 33.2 IP, 32 H, 10 ER, 6 BB, 26 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 7-6, 3.18 ERA, 99 IP, 96 H, 35 ER, 22 BB, 72 K in 21 appearances with 11 starts
Hartson knocks Thomas Pannone and Matt Esparza off the UTR crest and his July earned him a promotion to join them in Lynchburg.

Chicago White Sox
Dominican Summer League
LHP Leonardo De La Cruz – 22 years old
July stats: 0-2, 2.03 ERA, 31 IP, 26 H, 7 ER, 10 BB, 36 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 0-6, 3.25 ERA, 55.1 IP, 51 H, 20 ER, 25 BB, 64 K in 13 appearances with 11 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Aron McRee (Pioneer League Great Falls) 22 years old
July stats: 3-0, 1.82 ERA, 34.2 IP, 20 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 28 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 4-0, 2.64 ERA, 44.1 IP, 35 H, 13 ER, 2 BB, 37 K in 8 appearances with 7 starts
Yosmer Solorzano arose on my radar last month and I added him to my “very preliminary” 2017 One to Watch list. I could have been too quick to in jotting down that name, as McRee went off in July. He totally dominated the Pioneer League mentions for July, as he went 5 for 5….a UTR first.

L0A/HiA
RHP Luis Martinez (LoA Kannapolis) 21 years old
July stats: 3-0, 3.13 ERA, 23 IP, 17 H, 8 ER, 9 BB, 24 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 5-8, 4.30 ERA, 106.2 IP, 107 H, 51 ER, 37 BB, 107 K in 22 starts

Detroit
Dominican Summer League
RHP Eddy Castro – 21 years old
July stats: 2-1, 2.25 ERA, 24 IP, 22 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 10 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 2-4, 3.52 ERA, 38.1 IP, 35 H, 15 ER, 8 BB, 24 K in 11 appearances with 7 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Alfred Gutierrez (NY-Penn League Connecticut) 21 years old
July stats: 1-2, 3.46 ERA, 26 IP, 28 H, 10 ER, 1 BB, 18 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 1-4, 3.67 ERA, 49 IP, 51 H, 20 ER, 7 BB, 31 K in 10 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Kyle Dowdy (LoA West Michigan) 23 years old
July stats: 4-1, 1.87 ERA, 33.2 IP, 33 H, 7 ER, 8 BB, 23 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 8-2, 2.51 ERA, 86 IP, 85 H, 24 ER, 19 BB, 73 K in 19 appearances with 12 starts
UTR Upset Alert!!!…..Dowdy rejects Matt Hall bid for the sweep but throwing two shutouts, with one being a complete game. Hall has been the All-UTR this season, as nobody has come close each month. Hall didn’t have a bad July, but his demise may have been the drop of his K/BB rate from 3.30 to 1.54.

Houston
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jheyson Caraballo – 20 years old
July stats: 1-0, 2.78 ERA, 22.2 IP, 18 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 16 K in 5 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 2-0, 3.22 ERA, 44.2 IP, 35 H, 16 ER, 8 BB, 41 K in 11 appearances with 6 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Framber Valdez (NY-Penn League Tri-Ciy) 22 years old
July stats: 3-0, 1.80 ERA, 30 IP, 23 H, 6 ER, 10 BB, 37 K in 6 appearances with 4 start
Season stats: 4-1, 3.12 ERA, 43.1 IP, 15 ER, 14 BB, 52 K in 9 appearances with 6 starts
Valdez makes his way to LoA Quad Cities late in the month

L0A/HiA
RHP Elieser Hernandez (LoA Quad Cities) 21 years old
July stats: 1-1, 2.45 ERA, 29.1 IP, 29 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 40 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 5-7, 4.59 ERA, 86.1 IP, 99 H, 44 ER, 29 BB, 84 K in 19 appearances with 15 starts

Kansas City
Dominican Summer League
RHP Randy Acevedo – 19 years old
July stats: 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 28 IP, 25 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-0, 0.49 ERA, 55 IP, 45 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 25 K in 10 starts
Acevedo repeats with an unbelievable month. He doesn’t strikeout many, but that’s OK, because if you manage to get on base….your not going to score.

Rookie Leagues
RHP Geoff Bramblett (Appy League Burlington) 21 years old
July stats: 2-1, 2.49 ERA, 21.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 17 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-1, 3,03 ERA, 29.2 IP, 21 H, 10 ER, 5 BB, 25 K

 L0A/HiA
LHP Emilio Ogando (LoA Lexington) 22 years old
July stats: 2-1, 1.74 ERA, 31 IP, 21 H, 6 ER, 6 BB, 30 K in 5 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 7-9, 3.59 ERA, 112.2 IP, 107 H, 45 ER, 30 BB, 109 K in 21 appearances with 16 starts

Los Angles Angels
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jose Soriano – 17 years old
July stats: 2-1, 0.77 ERA, 23.1 IP, 13 H, 2 ER, 12 BB, 23 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-5, 2.00 ERA, 45 IP, 29 H, 10 ER, 24 BB, 37 K in 11 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Nate Bertness (Pioneer League Orem) 21 years old
July stats: 3-0, 2.48 ERA, 29 IP, 33 H, 8 ER, 5 BB, 23 K in 6 appearances with 5 starts
Season stats: 4-0, 2.58 ERA, 38.1 IP, 39 H, 11 ER, 9 BB, 32 K in 8 appearances with 7 starts

 L0A/HiA
RHP Austin Robichaux (LoA Burlington) 23 years old
July stats: 1-0, 3.91 ERA, 23 IP, 22 H, 10 ER, 9 BB, 16 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 2-1, 3.38 ERA, 40 IP, 33 H, 15 ER, 13 BB, 27 K in 9 starts
Robichaux repeats, but this time from the LoA level. Last month he benefited being on top in the Pioneer League due to the lack of performance of other pitchers. He was promoted at the end of June and nudged Jared Ruxer from repeating.

Minnesota
Dominican Summer League
RHP Juan Mojica – 21 years old
July stats: 2-0, 0.44 ERA, 20.1 IP, 11 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 24 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 4-2, 2.94 ERA, 49 IP, 35 H, 16 ER, 19 BB, 57 K in 11 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Brady Anderson (GCL Twins) 23 years old
July stats: 2-0, 1.08 ERA, 25 IP, 17 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 22 K in 6 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 2-0, 1.65 ERA, 32.2 IP, 25 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 27 K in 9 appearances with 5 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Fernando Romero (HiA Fort Myers) 21 years old
July stats: 2-1, 2.00 ERA, 27 IP, 23 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 26 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 7-3, 2.44 ERA, 70 IP, 55 H, 19 ER, 13 BB, 62 K in 13 starts
Felix Jorge made last month easy and he was promoted to Double-A but probably wished he could have stayed in Fort Myers. Randy LeBlanc on the other hand was thinking OK…..its my turn to be back on top of the UTR heap, but Fernando Romero had other plans. It was actually a horse-race for this months top spot, as Dereck Rodriguez, Eduardo Del Rosario, along with LeBlanc all had a shot.

New York Yankees
Dominican Summer League
RHP Rony Garcia – 18 years old
July stats: 1-0, 1.19 ERA, 22.2 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 20 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 2-3, 1.68 ERA, 48.1 IP, 38 H, 9 ER, 9 BB, 44 K in 10 appearances with 9 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Daniel Alvarez (GCL Yankees) 20 years old
July stats: 3-0, 1.40 ERA, 25.2 IP, 20 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 19 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 4-1, 1.94 ERA, 41.2 IP, 38 H, 9 ER, 9 BB, 33 K in 8 starts

L0A/HiA
LHP Nestor Cortes  (LoA Charleston / HiA Tampa) 21 years old
July stats: 4-1, 1.06 ERA, 34 IP, 25 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 26 K in 6 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 8-2, 1.10 ERA, 81.2 IP, 43 H, 10 ER, 19 BB, 84 K in 16 appearances with 8 starts
Cortes got the opportunity to start in July and he took full advantage with a solid month. He finished the month back in the bullpen going long relief, which had no bearing toward being named top pitcher for the Yankee. This isn’t the first time the 36th rounder from 2013 had the chance to make starts. He made ten with Appy League Pulakski and was very capable. In 4 seasons, Cortes has a 1.98 ERA over 195.1 innings with 208 K’s and only 39 BB’s.

Oakland
Dominican Summer League
LHP Jhenderson Hurtado– 20 years old
July stats: 3-1, 2.63 ERA, 24 IP, 24 H, 7 ER, 5 BB, 18 K in 5 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 3-1, 4.04 ERA, 49 IP, 50 H, 22 ER, 16 BB, 39 K in 11 appearances with 8 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Xavier Altamirano (NY-Penn League Vermont) 22 years old
July stats: 2-0, 0.99 ERA, 27.1 IP, 17 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 23 K in 6 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 4-5, 2.86 ERA, 69.1 IP, 64 H, 22 ER, 16 BB, 53 K in 17 appearances with 12 starts
The 27th round pick in 2015 came so close last month, but just needed a start or two to score.

L0A/HiA
LHP Evan Manarino (LoA Beloit) 23 years old
July stats: 2-2, 1.89 ERA, 38 IP, 35 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 33 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 8-5, 2.08 ERA, 125.2 IP, 113 H, 29 ER, 21 BB, 108 K in 23 appearances with 18 starts

Seattle
Dominican Summer League
RHP Andres Torres – 20 years old

Season stats: 8-2, 1.54 ERA, 64.1 IP, 43 H, 11 ER, 13 BB, 45 K in 11 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Reggie McClain (Northwest League Everett) 23 years old
July stats: 0-1, 4.43 ERA, 22.1 IP, 19 H, 11 ER, 2 BB, 32 K in 6 appearances with 3 starts
Season stats: 0-3, 6.59 ERA, 27.1 IP, 28 H, 20 ER, 3 BB, 39 K in 8 appearances with 5 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Zack Littell (LoA Clinton) 20 years old
July stats: 4-0, 0.84 ERA, 32 IP, 21 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 25 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 10-6, 2.56 ERA, 140.2 IP, 128 H, 40 ER, 27 BB, 134 K in 23 appearances in 22 starts
Littell follows-up a strong June performance to repeat in July.

Tampa Bay
Dominican Summer League
RHP Ronal Hernandez – 22 years old
July stats: 3-1, 2.16 ERA, 25 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 10 BB, 22 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-3, 2.83 ERA, 47.2 IP, 35 H, 15 ER, 15 BB, 43 K in 11 appearances with 9 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Travis Ott (NY-Penn League Hudson Valley) 21 years old
July stats: 2-0, 0.43 ERA, 21 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 23 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 4-0, 0.22 ERA, 41.2 IP, 16 H, 1 ER, 10 BB, 42 K in 9 appearances with 6 starts

L0A/HiA
LHP Michael Velasquez (LoA Bowling Green) 23 years old
July stats: 2-0, 2.35 ERA, 23 IP, 21 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 22 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 6-7, 4.99 ERA, 88.1 IP, 98 H, 49 ER, 21 BB, 87 K in 19 appearances with 17 starts
Last month this was the hardest selection to make, but Velasquez had a solid month to make it easier this time around. Roel Ramirez  received the nod in June and post similar numbers in July.

Texas
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jeifry Nunez – 18 years old
July stats: 0-1, 3.20 ERA, 19.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 5 BB, 19 K in 6 appearances with 5 starts
Season stats: 1-3, 3.89 ERA, 41.2 IP, 33 H, 18 ER, 11 BB, 36 K in 11 appearances with 10 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Sal Mendez (Northwest League Spokane) 21 years old
July stats: 2-2, 3.13 ERA, 23 IP, 23 H, 8 ER, 7 BB, 19 K in 5 appearances with 3 starts
Season stats: 3-3, 4.81 ERA, 33.2 IP, 36 H, 18 ER, 15 BB, 30 K in 9 appearances with 5 starts

L0A/HiA
No Pitcher Qualified for Mention
With Pedro Payano being on the DL since July 9th, no pitcher step through that open door to take over the top spot.

Toronto
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jose Dominguez – 20 years old
July stats: 3-1, 2.45 ERA, 29.1 IP, 26 H, 8 ER, 9 BB, 30 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-4, 3.61 ERA, 52.1 IP, 53 H, 21 ER, 15 BB, 54 K in 11 starts
Last month’s top pick Elio Silva gave it a good run to repeat, but Dominguez strung together 4 solid outings to win-out.

Rookie Leagues
RHP Joel Espinal (GCL Blue Jays) 19 years old
July stats: 4-0, 1.24 ERA, 29 IP, 17 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 27 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 4-0, 3.24 ERA, 41.2 IP, 33 H, 15 ER, 11 BB, 39 K in 9 appearances with 8 starts
This one just about came down to a coin flip between Espinal and Wilfri Aleton. Espinal scored 4 of his 5 starts with two making mentions in early July. Aleton on the other hand, also had 4 scoring starts with one mention on July 26th. Espinal did receive a promotion to Appy League Bluefield on July 22nd and was on my 2016 International Watch list prior to the start of the season. I also need to mention that Lupe Chavez was in the mix too, but dropped off due to being traded to Houston for Scott Feldman. He should be in the running as a 2017 “One to Watch” for the Astros, as he was “Just Off the Scope” when I posted my OTW this Spring.

L0A/HiA
RHP Conor Fisk (HiA Dunedin) 24 years old
July stats: 3-2, 3.75 ERA, 36 IP, 36 H, 15 ER, 5 BB, 27 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 9-5, 3.75 ERA, 93.2 IP, 92 H, 39 ER, 24 BB, 84 K in 27 appearances with 8 starts
The biggest upset comes with the last pitcher on the list. Francisco Rios has been automatic, being named tops over the last three months, but faltered in his last two starts in July. Breaking it down, he needed just one more quality start to make it 4 out of 4. Top prospects Jon Harris and Sean Reid-Foley had an outstanding month, with Harris joining Reid-Foley at HiA Dundin.
