UTRMinors – National League Top Pitchers – July 2016

Here’s my final 2016 UTR monthly top honors list for the National League. I once again broke down the best pitcher from each level within the organization, based on my scoring system. Unlike last month, I didn’t include an update of the pitchers selected during the previous months, as I’ll save that for my Under the Radar Organizational All-Star posts. That work begins right after August 14th, as I head into my last week of tracking. Once Marc’s tracking period come to an end, we will post the UTR-OAS schedule for the off-season, which always takes us right-up into Spring Training.

Arizona
Dominican Summer League
LHP Pedro Zorrilla – 20 years old
July stats: 3-0, 2.80 ERA, 35.1 IP, 33 H, 11 ER, 10 BB, 33 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 4-4, 2.73 ERA, 59.1 IP, 54 H, 18 ER, 14 BB, 30 K in 4 starts

 Rookie Leagues
RHP Tyler Mark (Northwest-Hillsboro) 21 years old
July stats: 1-0, 2.57 ERA, 14 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 9 K in 3 starts
Season stats: 4-7, 4.95 ERA, 76.1 IP, 84 H, 42 ER, 25 BB, 77 K in 16 appearances with 13 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Justin Donatella (LoA Kane County / HiA Visalia) 21 years old
July stats: 4-1, 2.48 ERA, 36.1 IP, 26 H, 10 ER, 10 BB, 25 K in 6 starts

Season stats: 10-5, 3.38 ERA, 109.1 IP, 100 H, 41 ER, 22 BB, 79 K in 20 starts
Donatella gets back on the board after getting shelled in June. My post-season work should have the 15th round pick in 2015 out of University of California as the Diamondbacks top UTR Pitcher for 2016.

Atlanta
Dominican Summer League
No DSL Team

Rookie Leagues
LHP Jaret Hellinger (Appy Danville) 20 years old
July stats: 2-2, 5.19 ERA, 26 IP, 23 H, 15 ER, 14 BB, 21 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 2-3, 5.35 ERA, 35.1 IP, 36 H, 21 ER, 17 BB, 27 K in 8 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Patrick Weigel (LoA Rome) 22 years old
July stats: 2-1, 2.61 ERA, 31 IP, 19 H, 9 ER, 8 BB, 32 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 7-4, 2.75 ERA, 111.1 IP, 82 H, 34 ER, 40 BB, 115 K in 20 starts
Weigel makes it back-to-back after my first choice of Trevor Belicek was traded to Baltimore.

Chicago Cubs
Dominican Summer League
LHP Faustino Carrera – 17 years old
July stats: 4-0, 0.58 ERA, 31 IP, 25 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 18 K in 5 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Jose Paulino (Northwest League Eugene / LoA South Bend ) 21 years old
July stats: 4-0, 1.50 ERA, 30 IP, 17 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 31 K in 5 starts
Paulino makes it two in-a-row. Just missing the cut was Erling Moreno (19 years old) who now breaks into the radar scope with Jesus Castillo being traded to the Angels. Erling was promoted on July 27th to Eugene from the AZL Cubs. He filled the spot vacated by Paulino who was shipped to South Bend.

L0A/HiA
RHP Preston Morrison (LoA South Bend / HiA Myrtle Beach) 22 years old
July stats: 1-1, 0.37 ERA, 24.1 IP, 23 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 27 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 9-4, 2.11 ERA, 98.1 IP, 90 H, 23 ER, 24 BB, 91 K in 18 appearances with 17 starts
Morrison has been the hottest UTR pitching prospect in the Cub’s system. He also makes it back-to-back by posting another month with a sub-1.00 ERA. The organization was busy making moves during the last week of July, as Morrison hopped-up to HiA Myrtle Beach. The 8th round pick in 2015 has lowered his ERA from April’s 6.11 to a current 2.11. Over his last 9 starts, Morrison has posted a 0.63 ERA with an unbelievable 4 earned runs allowed, 53 strikeouts, and  8 walks in 57 innings. He’s only allowed 1 earned run over his last 45.2 innings of work.

Cincinnati
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jhon De Jesus – 19 years old
July stats: 2-1, 1.88 ERA, 24 IP, 19 H, 5 ER, 6 BB, 12 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 4-3, 2.44 ERA, 59 IP, 53 H, 16 ER, 13 BB, 37 K in 10 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Ian Kahaloa (Pioneer League – Billings) 18 years old
July stats: 1-1, 2.38 ERA, 22.2 IP, 22 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 21 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 2-1, 1.76 ERA, 30.2 IP, 24 H, 6 BB, 31 K in 7 appearances in 6 starts
Kahaloa sits on the UTR fence as a 5th round pick in 2015. He didn’t get much work to start the season with the AZL Reds, in only making 2 appearances (1 start), but definitively somebody to keep a watchful eye.

 L0A/HiA
RHP Tejay Antone (HiA Daytona) 22 years old
July stats: 4-1, 2.32 ERA, 31 IP, 27 H, 12 ER, 9 BB, 19 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 11-6, 3.53 ERA, 127.1 IP, 130 H, 50 ER, 27 BB, 84 K in 21 starts

Colorado
Dominican Summer League
RHP Gabriel Estrada – 17 years old
July stats: 1-0, 0.50 ERA, 18 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 17 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 3-1, 1.97 ERA, 32. IP, 22 H, 7 ER, 10 BB, 33 K in 9 appearances with 7 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Erick Julio (Northwest League – Boise) 19 years old
July stats: 3-1, 3.25 ERA, 27.2 IP, 25 H, 10 ER, 6 BB, 25 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-3, 3.88 ERA, 51 IP, 51 H, 22 ER, 13 BB, 40 K in 10 starts
By UTR standards, a somewhat surprising move by the organization to bring Julio to the States with just two DSL starts this season and after missing the whole 2015 season. As a 17 year old, he had a strong debut season the DSL in 2014.

L0A/HiA
RHP Yency Almonte (HiA Modesto) 22 years old
July stats: 3-3, 2.23 ERA, 40.1 IP, 34 H, 10 ER, 10 BB, 44 K in 6 starts
Season stats: 8-8, 3.39 ERA, 132.2 IP, 118 H, 50 ER, 36 BB, 132 K in 21 starts

Los Angeles Dodgers
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jose Chacin – 19 years old
July stats: 2-0, 3.00 ERA, 21 IP, 18 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 17 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 5-1, 1.89 ERA, 52.1 IP, 42 H, 11 ER, 9 BB, 44 K in 10 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Roberth Fernandez –  21 years old
July stats: 2-2, 4.97 ERA, 25.1 IP, 27 H, 14 ER, 6 BB, 23 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-4, 4.99 ERA, 39.2 IP, 40 H, 22 ER, 10 BB, 38 K in 8 starts
The Odgen Raptors are the only Rookie League team for the Dodgers. After nobody on their staff qualified in June, Fernandez came alive in July. He strung two solid starts back-to-back to be mentioned on July 13th and July 18th and scored on July 30th. He’s been the lone bright spot on the staff.

L0A/HiA
RHP Isaac Anderson (LoA Great Lakes / Hi Rancho Cucamonga) 22 years old
July stats: 2-1, 1.57 ERA, 23 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 18 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 8-5, 3.71 ERA, 97 IP, 83 H, 40 ER, 19 BB, 101 K in 19 appearances with 18 starts

I love it when a 40th round pick (2015) rises to top. Last month, Imani Abdullah was the clear cut choice and probably would have repeated, had he not allowed 8 extra-base hits that inflated his ERA (5.94) for July. Another strong contender was Wes Helsabeck, who moved into the rotation at L0A Great Lakes, and had three shutout outings.

Miami
Dominican Summer League
RHP George Soriano – 17 years old
July stats: 0-3, 3.52 ERA, 23 IP, 18 H, 9 ER, 9 BB, 25 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 0-5, 3.73 ERA, 41 IP, 35 H, 17 ER, 21 BB, 40 K in 14 appearances with 6 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Jose Diaz (NY-Penn League Batavia) 23 years old
July stats: 0-1, 2.45 ERA, 25.2 IP, 21 H, 7 ER, 8 BB, 12 K in 6 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Luis Castillo (HiA Jupiter) 23 years old
July stats: 2-0, 1.61 ERA, 28 IP, 24 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 31 K in 5 starts

Season stats: 7-3, 2.25 ERA, 100 IP, 82 H, 25 ER, 15 BB, 84 K in 5 starts
To good to be true that Castillo came out on top. He’s hasn’t pitched since July 26th, probably because of jet lag. He was traded twice within two days near the deadline and I would guess he made two cross-country trips in the process. First on July 29th, he was a piece in the Andrew Cashner deal that sent Castillo to San Diego. Then a couple day later, the Padres and Marlins hooked-up again. The Marlins got Castillo back, while the Padres re-acquire their 12th round pick (2011) in Colin Rea.

Milwaukee
Dominican Summer League
RHP Johan Dominguez – 20 years old
July stats: 2-2, 1.86 ERA, 29 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 32 K in 5 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 4-3, 2.34 ERA, 50 IP, 33 H, 13 ER, 16 BB, 52 K in 14 appearances with 6 starts

Rookie Leagues
RHP Jordan Desguin (Pioneer League Helena) 22 years old
July stats: 1-0, 4.13 ERA, 24 IP, 19 H, 11 ER, 5 BB, 25 K in 3 appearances with 2 starts
Season stats: 2-0, 3.60 ERA, 40 IP, 34 H, 16 ER, 11 BB, 40 K in 8 appearances with 4 starts
Desguin repeats as the Brewers top Rookie League pitcher. There wasn’t much to choose from, as the AZL Brewers didn’t offer much other than Carlos Herrera and Helena swung most of their pitcher between starting and the bullpen.

L0A/HiA
RHP Jon Perrin (HiA Brevard County) 23 years old
July stats: 0-2, 2.81 ERA, 25.2 IP, 24 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 20 K in 5 appearances with 3 starts

Season stats: 3-8, 2.66 ERA, 121.2 IP, 115 H, 36 ER, 17 BB, 118 K in 21 appearances with 18 starts

New York Mets
Dominican Summer League
RHP Jaison Vilera – 19 years old
July stats: 3-0, 0.64 ERA, 28.1 IP, 17 H, 2 ER, 9 BB, 20 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-1, 2.06 ERA, 43.2 IP, 33 H, 10 ER, 15 BB, 33 K in 10 appearances with 9 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Thomas Szapucki (Appy Kingsport / NY-Penn League – Brooklyn) 20 years old
July stats: 3-1, 0.59 ERA, 30.2 IP, 18 H, 2 ER, 9 BB, 46 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-2, 0.44 ERA, 41.1 IP, 22 H, 2 ER, 13 BB, 65 K in 7 starts

L0A/HiA
LHP P.J. Conlon (HiA St. Lucie) 22 years old
July stats: 2-1, 1.65 ERA, 27.1 IP, 23 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 24 K in 5 starts

Season stats: 11-2, 1.87 ERA, 120.1 IP, 103 H, 25 ER, 16 BB, 92 K in 19 starts
Conlon and Kevin Canelon battled it out again this month, with Conlon winning out for the 3rd-time in 4 months. The 13th round pick in 2015 is dominating HiA just as he did with LoA Columbia.

Philadelphia
Dominican Summer League
LHP Denny Martinez – 19 years old
July stats: 5-0, 0.90 ERA, 30 IP, 13 H, 3 ER, 7 BB, 31 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 7-1, 2.21 ERA, 53 IP, 36 H, 13 ER, 10 BB, 58 K in 10 starts

Rookie Leagues
LHP Bailey Falter (NY-Penn League – Williamsport) 19 years old
July stats: 1-2, 2.00 ERA, 27 IP, 23 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 35 K in 5 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Franklyn Kilome (LoA Lakewood) 21 years old
July stats: 2-0, 1.48 ERA, 24.1 IP, 19 H, 4 ER, 8 BB, 32 K in 4 starts

Season stats: 3-8, 4.28 ERA, 90.1 IP, 93 H, 43 ER, 43 BB, 96 K in 18 starts

Pittsburgh
Dominican Summer League
RHP Leandro Pina – 17 years old
July stats: 2-1, 1.50 ERA, 24 IP, 21 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 16 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 2-2, 1.52 ERA, 47.1 IP, 40 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 29 K in 10 starts
Pina makes it two-in-a-row

Rookie Leagues
RHP Danny Beddes (NY-Penn League – West Virgina) 22 years old
July stats: 3-1, 2.39 ERA, 26.1 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 7 BB, 20 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-2, 2.32 ERA, 42.2 IP, 32 H, 11 ER, 13 BB, 32 K in 9 appearances with 7 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Gage Hinsz (LoA West Virginia) 20 years old
July stats: 3-3, 2.36 ERA, 34.1 IP, 32 H, 9 ER, 4 BB, 20 K in 6 starts

Season stats: 4-6, 3.15 ERA, 65.2 IP, 65.2 H, 23 ER, 14 BB, 48 K in 12 starts
The 11th round pick in 2014 got off to a late start with his first start coming on June 3rd. All of his 12 starts have been quality outings with his last three posting a 1.17 ERA over 16.1 innings along with 17 strikeouts and 5 walks.

San Diego
Dominican Summer League
LHP Omar Fernandez – 17 years old
July stats: 2-0, 0.99 ERA, 27.1 IP, 16 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 12 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 3-0, 0.52 ERA, 52.1, 28 H, 3 ER, 8 BB, 26 K in 10 starts
Fernandez put-up almost identical peripherals compared to June, thus it was an easy choice to have him repeat.

Rookie Leagues
RHP Jean Garcia (AZL Padres) 19 years old
July stats: 1-2, 2.25 ERA, 28 IP, 20 H, 7 ER, 5 BB, 20 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 1-3, 3.00 ERA, 39 IP, 33 H, 13 ER, 11 BB, 30 K in 8 appearances with 7 starts

L0A/HiA
RHP Brett Kennedy (HiA Lake Elsinore) 22 years old
July stats: 2-2, 2.87 ERA, 31.1 IP, 30 H, 10 ER, 7 BB, 39 K in 6 starts

Season stats: 6-8, 3.17 ERA, 108 IP, 110 H, 38 ER, 41 BB, 120 K in 22 starts
Kennedy is getting stronger as the season winds down. In his last 6 starts, the 11th rounder from 2016 has gone 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA over 33.1 innings with 37 strikeouts and 9 BB’s

San Francisco
Dominican Summer League
RHP Miguel Figueroa – 18 years old
July stats: 4-0, 1.88 ERA, 28.2 IP, 22 H, 6 ER, 6 BB, 13 K in 5 starts
Season stats: 5-0, 2.58 ERA, 45.1 IP, 13 ER, 12 BB, 25 K

Rookie Leagues
RHP D.J. Meyers (AZL Giants) 21 years old
July stats: 0-0, 2.35 ERA, 23 IP, 29 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 25 K in 6 appearances with 4 starts
Season stats: 0-2, 2.81 ERA, 32 IP, 47 H, 10 ER, 3 BB, 34 K in 9 appearances with 6 starts
The big righty comes in at 6′ 5″ 255 lbs and is having a solid debut season (15th round-2016).

L0A/HiA
RHP Michael Connolly (LoA Augusta) 24 years old
July stats: 3-1, 1.93 ERA, 28 IP, 18 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 23 K in 4 starts

Season stats: 9-4, 2.51 ERA, 107.2 IP, 101 H, 30 ER, 22 BB, 87 K in 20 appearances with 14 starts
Not much to get excited about in a 24 year old still in LoA. But you know the Giants, they can make a hero out of these types when (if) they make it to AT&T Park.

St. Louis
Dominican Summer League
RHP Noel De Jesus– 19 years old
July stats: 1-2, 2.08 ERA, 21.2 IP, 17 H, 5 ER, 10 BB, 14 K in 5 starts

July stats: 2-3, 4.40 ERA, 30.2 IP, 36 H, 15 ER, 11 BB, 22 K in 6 starts
The 29th round pick out of high school in 2014 is stepping up his game with the promotions of Dailyn Martinez and Ronnie Williams.

L0A/HiA
RHP Matt Pearce (HiA Palm Beach) 22 years old
July stats: 2-3, 1.93 ERA, 46.2 IP, 33 H, 13 ER, 2 BB, 29 K in 6 starts

Season stats: 8-8, 2.37 ERA, 136.2 IP, 114 H, 36 ER, 15 BB, 81 K in 20 starts
Pearce comes back to the list after being named top pitcher in May.

Washington
Dominican Summer League
LHP Yelmery Sisnero – 18 years old
July stats: 2-2, 0.90 ERA, 20 IP, 14 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 16 K in 4 starts
Season stats: 4-3, 0.43 ERA, 41.2 IP, 29 H, 2 ER, 9 BB, 41 K in 9 starts
Repeats from his June performance.

Rookie Leagues
RHP Jeffrey Rosa (GCL Nationals) 21 years old

Season stats: 0-3, 4.26 ERA, 25.1 IP, 23 H, 12 ER, 9 BB, 23 K in 7 starts

L0A/HiA
Believe it or not…..no pitcher within the Nationals LoA/HiA squads scored high enough to be mentioned. Erick Fedde was the lone bright spot, but doesnt earn a UTR mention being a 1st round draft pick. The backstory would have been Mark Blackmar who the Nationals re-signed on July 5th from the Indy League. The 24 year-old was drafted in the 16th round in 2011 by Baltimore where he spent 3 seasons before being traded to the White Sox for Alejandro De Aza. He spent 2015 with Double-A Birmingham and was released prior to the 2016 Spring Training. He made two decent starts in mid-July with HiA Potomac and was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg. One more good start would have scored him the top honor for July.
