July 30, 2016 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

Vacation time has come to a close, and it’s time to get back to boxscore scanning. I have to confess though. It took me a little longer than usual to get through today’s lines after reading the up-to-the-minute MLB Trade Deadline drama. The Jonathan Lucroy situation has/had me hooked.

I thought (at least for a while) the Milwaukee Brewers received quite a nice prospect haul in sending All-Star catch Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians. The headliner was catcher Francisco Mejia, who’s currently riding an amazing 42-game hitting streak. The Indian’s were also sending OF Greg Allen, a 2014 – 6th rounder and five time 2016 UTR Hitter of the Day selection. But most notably for UTRMinors fans, the deal included shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang, a 2014 international signee out of Taiwan, a 2014 Organizational All-Star and current 10 time UTR Hitter of the Day choice so far in 2016. Sticking with Chang, I’m somewhat relieved he’s staying in Cleveland despite the fact I believe he would benefit from a trade. In my 2014 Indians Organizational All-Star post, I mentioned how Chang was a UTR based on several criteria. However, it was mostly based upon the fact he was behind superstar prospect Francisco Lindor on the minor league depth chart. Obviously, Lindor has made quite an impact in his first full season in the majors. He’s posted near identical numbers in 100 games as he did in the 99 he logged in 2015. So, when the news came that Chang was heading to Milwaukee, I was excited, but it was deja vu all over again.

The Brewers boast another superstar shortstop in Orlando Arcia. A kid I believe could be as impact a superstar as his Cleveland counterpart Lindor. The best part about what we do here is Chang is one of those kids who if traded to just the right organization, could be that potent power bat that could help raise the floor of the prospect portion of your fantasy roster. Despite a glove that could use some work (15 errors in 2016; 44 overall in 2+ pro seasons) his bat is what will carry him either through Cleveland or to another system via trade. His 2014 PAG/APPA score was a robust 4.24/.983 which is why he was a clear-cut 2014 OAS choice. He lapsed a bit in 2015 (2.65/.632) in 105 games with LoA Lake County, but he’s really broken out as a 2o-year-old for HiA Lynchburg this season. Even though his PAG has dipped slightly (3.93), it’s Chang’s 2016 APPA that has me giddy, as he’s eclipsed the 1.00 APPA threshold. In layman’s terms, Chang scores 1.02 fantasy points every time he makes a plate appearance. Which puts him in short company this season regarding UTR prospects at the HiA level.

So, in the terms of Cleveland’s openness to deal Chang, and now Lucroy’s trade veto, I really hope the Indians stay on this track with Chang and seek out other trade suitors because the 6’1″ – 175 lb. righty could really flourish in an organization with a clear path to the majors. Numbers don’t lie and Chang has the skills to make true believers out of more than just the UTR many.
