April 14, 2016 – Under the Radar Pitcher Performances

TOP NL UTR PITCHING PERFORMANCE

RHP Bret Helton (LoA West Virgina – Pittsburgh) 22 years old
5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, Won 1-0
  • The young right-hander must have read my post from a couple days ago, where I  mentioned that he was the only WV Power starter that hasn’t made the UTR list this season. Well…he changed that last night, by facing three batters over the minimum in five scoreless innings and getting top honors today. The WV Power starting rotation is the under the radar story in the minor leagues, thus far. In 40.2 innings, they have only allowed 3 runs and two of those came the night before Helton’s start when Logan Sendelbach gave up 2 runs in 4.2 innings. The whole 5-man rotation, except Mitch Keller (2nd Rd) are a UTR criteria’s dream, as they were drafted from the 6th round and later with Dario Agrazal being an international signee. So… as I mentioned, the staff has thrown 40.2 innings taking away the five innings hurled by Helton, the rest were all on the road, as the Power made their home debut last night….very impressive. They have a combined ERA of 0.66 and Power have jumped out to a 6-2 record, not only from strong starts, but also from a decent bullpen which has only allowed 5 earned runs in 32.1 innings.

  • 19th round choice of the Red Sox in 2013, Speier has been caught-up in 3 trades. First came in 2014 when he was sent from Boston, along with Yoenis Cespedes, to Detroit for Rick Porcello. A year later, he was shipped to Atlanta for Cameron Maybin. The lefty never had the chance to completely unpack his bags in the Braves Clubhouse because almost 3 weeks later, he was headed West to Arizona in the steal of the century. Speier, with Shelby Miller, was involved the heist that garnered Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair and Dansby Swanson to the Braves.
