May 20, 2015 – Under the Radar Hitters of the Day

National League:

  • K.J. Woods, DH – LoA Greensboro Grasshoppers (MIA) – South Atlantic League – 19 yo;
    • 2-3, HR(2), 2B, R, 2RBi, 2BB, K
  • Michael Conforto, LF – HiA St. Lucie Mets (NYM) – Florida State League – 22 yo;
    • 2-5, HR(7), 2R, RBi, K
  • Rhys Hoskins, 1B – LoA Lakewood Blue Claws (PHI) – South Atlantic League – 22 yo;
    • 2-3, 3B, 2R, RBi, BB, K
  • Clint Coulter, DH – HiA Brevard County Manatees (MIL) – Florida State League – 21 yo;   (2014 Org. All-Star)
    • 2-4, HR(9), 2B, 3R, 2RBi
  • Daniel Palka, 1B – HiA Visalia Rawhide (ARI) – California League – 23 yo;
    • 3-5, 2B, R, RBi, 2 SB(11)
    • *At the start of the UTR POD regular season, Jim continued his process of player mentions; listing (as well as publishing) how many times a pitcher made his Pitcher Performances list. This a great indicator for in-season progression and off-season prediction.  Now, while Jim’s mention points is a great indicator for pitchers, it can be a “neither here-nor-there” measure for hitters.  This is simply due to the fact that most hitters who make my daily lists are everyday regulars who can simply have a good day at the plate versus days where they don’t. Therefore I chose to bury the notion of publishing mention points for my hitters.  However, that doesn’t mean HiA Visalia 1B Daniel Palka’s eight UTR HOD appearances so far this seasons have gone unnoticed. He’s having a killer season for the Rawhide and currently sits in the Cal League top 10 in several offensive categories including home runs (7) and stolen bases (11).  In fact, the 6’2″ – 220 lb. lefty currently trails only Astros phenom Carlos Correa in overall [minor league] doubles so far this season. Both prospects hold an identical 51% extra-base percentage and Palka is three round-trippers away from being the only player in the all the minors with double-digit homers and steals.*
  • Shane Hoelscher, 3B – LoA Asheville Tourists (COL) – South Atlantic League – 23 yo;
    • 2-4, HR(1), 2R, 3RBi, BB, K
  • Josh Fuentes, 1B – LoA Asheville Tourists (COL) – South Atlantic League – 22 yo;
    • 3-5, HR(1), 2B, R, 3RBi, K
  • Franchy Cordero, LF – LoA Fort Wayne Tin Caps (SD) – Midwest League – 20 yo;
    • 3-3, HR(2), R, 2RBi
    • *The 6’3″ – 175lb. lefty has logged 34 games this season with 22 games coming in at shortstop, six as the Tin Caps designated hitter and six games in left field. The vast majority of Cordero’s prospect stock is tied into his bat. Defensively though, Cordero’s play at shortstop has been nothing short of a disaster. In 164 career games, the young Dominican has yet to post a fielding percentage over .840. Surprisingly, Cordero’s six games in left field so far have been errorless. This could be an intriguing development to follow moving forward.*

American League:

  • Abiatal Avelino, SS – HiA Tampa Yankees (NYY) – Florida State League – 20 yo;
    • 2-4, HR(1), R, RBi, SB(7/23)
    • *Avelino’s stolen base totals show the SB’s at his current level (7) then his overall total (23). Avelino received a promotion to HiA on May 15.*
  • Jace Conrad, 3B – LoA Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) – Midwest League – 22 yo;
    • 3-4, HR(6), 2B, 2R, 3RBi, BB
  • Joao Ayres, 3B – VSL Rays (TB) – Venezuelan Summer League – 18 yo;
    • 3-5, HR(1), 2R, 3RBi, 2K
  • D.J. Davis, RF – LoA Lansing Lugnuts (TOR) – Midwest League – 20 yo;
    • 3-4, 2B, 2R, 2RBi, SB(8)
  • Luigi Rodriguez, DH – HiA Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) – Carolina League – 22 yo;  (2014 Org. All-Star)
    • 2-5, HR(6), 2B, 2R, RBi, 2K
  • Ramon Torres, 2B – HiA Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) – Carolina League – 22 yo;  (2014 Org. All-Star)
    • 3-5, 3B(1), R, RBi, SB(8)
  • Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado, CF – LoA Lexington Legends (KC) – South Atlantic League – 20 yo;
    • 3-4, HR(5), 2R, RBi, K
  • Niko Goodrum, 3B – HiA Fort Myers Miracle (MIN) – Florida State League – 23 yo;
    • 1-3, 2B, 2R, RBi, 2BB, K, SB(9)
  • Tyler Marincov, RF – HiA Stockton Ports (OAK) – California League – 23 yo;  (2014 Org. All-Star)
