June 2, 2014 – UTR Pitcher Performances

SP Chris Flexen (LoA Savannah – New York Mets) 19 years old
7 Innings, 3 Hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K – SP\TPS .144

* One of the frustrating things about closely following prospects, is a lack of information. The type of information thats not stat based but any narrative to understand why/what an organization is doing with their minor league players. Chris Flexen is a case example. Here’s a kid that is clearly over his head at LoA Savannah and is taking his lumps with each start. Are the Mets (Oh yes, the Mets) just getting him work until the Rookie leagues begin or are they hoping that there is some sort of benefit to be found by surrounding the 14th Rd pick in 2012 with the talent in the Sand Gnats staff? Whatever it is….will we find out later that Flexen may have had a high-ceiling, but the start of the 2014 season may/could have destroyed his psyche as a starting pitcher. Flexen had a solid 2013 campaign (8-1, 2.09 ERA, 69 IP, 12 BB, 62 K, 0.942 WHIP, .093 TPS). On the TPS scale, Flexen ranked just slightly higher than Rafael Montero (.094). This all all happened with Flexen, who was drafted out of high school, pitching against talent that was 2.5 years older that the right-hander. This year he’s up against Lo-A bats that are almost 3 years older. So, again….what are the Mets doing? There’s not even a glimmer of promise when looking at his peripherals this season. Let’s hope that he bounces back when the Appy League starts in a couple weeks.

SP Sal Romano ( LoA Dayton – Cincinnati)  20 years old
6 Innings, 5 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, Win (4-4) – SP\TPS .095

*3-Time UTR Mention – Here’s a kid that I really, really like. The 23rd round selection out of a Connecticut HS in 2011 was my 2013 Breakout pick. Last time I had this much love for a Reds prospect was for Daniel Corcino back in 2011, when he was just about where Romano is now with LoA Dayton. The following year I tapped Tony Cingrani in the same way….and look how that turned out. Corcino is still battling, but he may have hit the dreaded Double-A wall. Unlike Corcino who was a relief pitcher, Romano is a sturdy starter that…with some cleaner mechanics and continued work on his change-up could be a innings eater for the Reds…ala Aaron Harang. Absolutely love him!

SP Sean Furney (LoA South Bend – Arizona) 23 years old
7 Innings, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, Win (2-1) SP\TPS .123

*Furney scored near the top of the TPS scale (.073) in 2013 as a relief pitcher (15 appearances with 5 starts). So the Diamondbacks see something in Furney and start the right-hander out in the rotation with Double-A Mobile. What they seen was short-lived, as he was shipped the South Bend after one start. While there, they are continuing to groom him as a starter and the results are pedestrian at best.

SP Joe Gunkel (LoA Greenville – Boston) 22 years old
6 Innings, 5 Hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 2.31 ERA, Win (2-0) – cSR\TPS .080

*3-Time UTR Mention – Its his 2nd mention as a starter, as the Red Sox are trying their hand by placing Gunkel in the rotation. Its his first taste as a starter, as I had picked the 2013 draftee (18th Rd) as the 2014 UTR Breakout relief pitcher for the Red Sox. Besides the rough outing on May 28th, Gunkel is holding his own. I guess this will do, until my SP Breakout pick (Sergio Gomez) begin play in the next two weeks.

RP Angel Nesbitt (HiA Lakeland – Detroit) 23 years old
2 Innings, 0 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0.86, Win (2-0) – RP\TPS .074

RP Brandon Peterson (HiA Fort Myers – Minnesota) 22 years old
2 Innings, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0.79 ERA – RP\TPS .053

* Spent April at LoA Cedar Rapids and all of May at HiA Fort Myers and the way he’s been pitching out the Pen, he could keep going. The 13th round pick last year from NCAA powerhouse Wichita State has only given up 2 ER over 22.2 IP with 33:5 K:BB rate.

Some DSL pitchers are off to a good start. After a day off on Sunday, here’s a few more…….

SP Argenis Blanco (DSL Athletics – Oakland) 18 years old
5 Innings, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, Win (1-0)

SP Erasmo Pinales (DSL Astros – Houston) 19 years old
5 Innings, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

SP Luis Jimenez (DSL Rangers – Texas) 17 years old
