April 28, 2014 – UTR Pitcher Performances

Good Afternoon Everyone! Its a dreary Monday afternoon as I look outside my office window and a cold steady rain is falling. The front pushed through late yesterday and affected the minor leagues games throughout the Country last night. Worse of all… our Thoughts and Prayers to those effected by the horrific damage and destruction in the Southern States, some real heartbreaking stories from those suffering a personal loss by the wicked weather.

Its another short list today, just like the guy who writes about the hitters. We might be 3-hours apart, but our stories seem to have a common theme, as I too have first timers today….but I can not produce a pitcher that compares to Nimmo nor Story. I do have a interesting side-liner on a Dodger pitcher, who put up an odd line last night.

SP Fabio Martinez (HiA Rancho Cucamonga – Los Angeles Dodgers) 24 years old
6 Innings, 0 Hits, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 3.81 ERA – .090 TPS
*A reclamation project for the Dodgers, Martinez has been a pro since 2007, as a 17-year old with the Angels. Command and control issues have plagued him since 2010 and progressively got worse when he was sent to Cleveland in late 2012. The Indians moved him into the pen in 2013 where he put up some ugly numbers in 23 appearances (10.48 ERA in 28.1 IP, 33 ER, 35 BB, 37 K)  between Hi-A and Double-A. I believe a case could be made that Martinez was mis-handled, as he clearly did not spend the time needed for development at the Lo-A level. There is a hint of promise when running his numbers through TPS. In 2012 his TPS was .135 and though his stats from 2013 were horrendous, he improved his TPS to .106, a 45 point drop the into 2014 season. Proof of those numbers working could be that along with last night’s outing, it was the second 6-inning no-hit performance by Martinez already this season. Martinez is another interesting story to watch unfold this season.

SP Jason Wheeler ( HiA Fort Myers – Minnesota) 23 years old
9 Innings, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, Win (2-1) 2.70 ERA – .177 TPS
* Wheeler just the opposite of Martinez, but he must be lobbing softballs across the plate (32 Hits in 30 IP, 7 BB, 14 K in 5 starts)

RP Richard Rodriguez ( HiA Lancaster – Houston) 24 years old
2 Innings, 0 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K  * 1st Appearance of 2014

RP Wilson Santos ( LoA Fort Wayne – San Diego) 22 years old
2 Innings, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K * 1st Appearance of 2014
